Per cent ages ? Answer s

As calculat or s ar e not per mit t ed in t he Level 2 exam ? quick ment al met hods have been shown wher e possible (but t hese ar e not t he only way of answer ing t he quest ions!).

1. 10% of ? 79.50 = ? 7.95 (move t he decimal point one place t o t he lef t ) So 30% = (? 8 x 3) ? 15p = ? 23.85 Sale pr ice of j acket = (79.50 ? 23.85) = ? 55.65

2. 150/ 250 = 3/ 5 = 60% of t ot al needed f or new equipment

3. VAT = 240 + 120 + 60 (i.e. 10% + 5% + 2.5%) = ? 420 So t ot al cost of t he j ob = ? 2400 + ? 420 = ? 2820

4. 55/ 220 = 11/ 44 = ? = 25% f at al accident s wer e on building sit es

5. 25% of ? 239.50 = ? 59.875 (divide by f our or halve t hen halve again) Round t o ? 59.88 So DVD player is (? 239.50 + ? 59.88) af t er incr ease = ? 299.38

6. A f amily pays ? 1200 per mont h on bills. ? 720 ? 12 = ? 60 per mont h on gas. 60/ 1200 = 1/ 20 = 5% mont hly bill goes t o Br it ish Gas

7. 4250 ? 4 = 1062.5 (halve, t hen halve again) Rounds up t o 1063 cr imes due t o bur glar y

8. A weekly shop cost s ? 85.00. 15% of ? 85 = ? 8.50 (10%) + ? 4.25 (5%) = ? 12.75 So man pays ? 85.00 - ? 12.75 = ? 72.25

9. 50% of 9870 = 4935 (divide by 2) 10% of 9870 = 987 (move decimal point one place lef t ) So 60% = 4935 + 987 = 5922 5922 complet e t he r ace

10. A shop r educes a t able lamp f r om ? 19.99 t o ? 17.99 ? 20 - ? 18 = ? 2 r educt ion 2/ 20 = 1/ 10 = 10% r educt ion of or iginal pr ice
