Population Calculation Worksheet

Population Calculation Formulas

Population density

|( |population |) |= Population Density |

| |area | | |

|for example: |( |270,000,000 people |) |= 29 people per square kilometer |

| | |9,166,605 sq. km. | | |

Birth or Death Rates:

|( |# of births or deaths per year |) |= Birth or Death Rate |

| |total population | | |

|for example: |( |23,452 births |) |= 0.025 = 2.5% birth rate |

| | |942,721 people | | |

Calculating Net Migration:

(number immigrating) - (number emigrating) = Net Migration

Note: negative percentages are possible if more individuals are leaving than entering

For example (1000 people enter) - (2000 people leave) = -10000

(-1000 people/30,000) X 100 = -3.33%

Calculating Rate of Population Change:

(birth rate) - (death rate) + (net migration) = Rate of change

For example (2.5%) - (1%) + (-3.33%) = -1.83%

Note: If the rate of change is a negative number the population is shrinking.

Finding FUTURE Population from Growth Rate:

( initial population ) X ( growth rate or rate of change) years = Final Population

NOTE: a growth rate of 3% is expressed as 1.03; a growth rate of 0.25% is 1.0025

for example: ( 468,843 people ) X ( 1.03 )10 years = 630,085 people
