OBJECTIVE

To study human populations by interpreting and constructing age structure diagrams, calculating population density, percent of growth rate, exponential growth, doubling time, and analyzing graphs.

MATERIALS

❖ Scientific or Graphing Calculator

❖ Data Provided

PROCEDURE

Study the two graphs below of the world population growth rate and world population.

Explain why the world population is continuing to rise when the growth rate is falling?

AGE STRUCTURE PYRAMIDS

An age structure pyramid gives the number of percentages of individuals in each age group, separated by gender. The pre-reproductive age is considered 1-14, reproductive ages are 15-44 and post-reproductive ages are 45+. The number of reproductive females determines the fertility rate and the number of births. Populations with large numbers of females in this group, or females ready to move into this group, have a high reproductive potential.

[pic]Use the age structure pyramid of the United States as an example. Use the following world data to construct two age structure pyramids for the world population comparing developed nations to developing nations. Place your labeled diagrams on the next page.

|World Population by age in 2014 |

|(in millions) |

|Developed Countries | |Developing Countries |

|Males |Females |Age Groups |Males |Females |

|19.5 |37.9 |80+ |24.9 |36.3 |

|39.4 |52.7 |70-79 |79.1 |91.8 |

|64.0 |72.4 |60-69 |159 |167 |

|83.6 |88.6 |50-59 |259 |264 |

|87.7 |88.2 |40-49 |375 |369 |

|86.1 |85.3 |30-39 |431 |417 |

|83.4 |80.9 |20-29 |515 |492 |

|70.5 |66.8 |10-19 |546 |509 |

|70.8 |67.3 |0-9 |573 |535 |

Use colored pencils to shade in the appropriate bins according to the data.

(You only need different colors for males vs. females)

It is a commonly stated idea that if countries lowered their birth rates, they would have more wealth. Based on the data table you just completed, state the relationship between overpopulation and wealth.

CONCLUSION

Type your answers and attach them to this packet.

Compare the trends in age structure pyramids between the world’s developing and developed nations. Then compare the differences in the survival ratio by gender between developing and developed countries to help you answer these questions.

1. Does the United States exhibit the same ratio patterns as other developed nations?

Explain.

2. Based on the examples provided, what is the general shape of age structure pyramids for developing nations?

3. What does this shape indicate about the growth potential for those countries?

4. Which three of the developed nations’ pyramids show negative growth rates? How can you tell?

5. Which of the developing nations has the greatest growth potential during the next 70

years assuming growth rates are constant? Explain.

6. Which developed country illustrated in the pyramids has the smallest population?

7. Calculate the number of years until the population of Lebanon doubles, with a current growth rate of 9.37% (currently the highest rate in the world) with a population of 5.9 million (July 2014 est.). Show your work.

8. Discuss how age distribution affects the political and economic climate of a country.

9. Compare the amount of environmental degradation caused by developed and

developing nations.

10. What are some ways that a society could increase the carrying capacity of their

country without decreasing the population size?
