Calculating Speed/Velocity

1. Find the average speed of a jet that flies from Brisbane to Cairns (1700km) in 2hrs.

2. What is the average speed of a boat that travels to Moreton Island from Scarborough (56 km) if the journey takes 2hrs?

3. What is the average velocity of a plane that flies 1000 kilometres north in a time of 4 hours. And then 600 km East in another 2hours (answer in K/hr)?

Calculating Distance

4. Claire is running to a shoe shop during a sale. She runs for 13 seconds at a speed of 7 m/s. How far did Claire have to run to get to the shop?

5. Stephanie runs around the oval at an average speed of 9km/hr for 90 seconds, how far has she travelled?

Calculating Time

6. Bob was chasing Daisy the cow. They ran 330 metres at a speed of 6m/s. How far did both Bob and Daisy run?

7. A bullet travels at 850 m/s. How long will it take a bullet to go 1 km? Be careful of the units!!!

Graphing

8. Describe the motion for each of the following graphs:

Distance Displacement Speed Velocity

Time Time Time Time

Calculating Acceleration

9. On a Friday afternoon Mr Turner’s car accelerates out of the front gate from 1 m/s to 23 m/s. It takes only 9 seconds for his sick car to accelerate. Calculate the acceleration?

Calculating Final speed/velocity

10. A toy rocket accelerates from the launch pad with an acceleration of 16m/s/s for a time of 28 seconds unitl the motors cut out. Calculate the speed it reached?

Calculating time from accelaration

11. A toy racing car turns onto the main straight at a speed of 6m/s, but by the end of the straight it is travelling at a speed of 24m/s. If it Acceleratedat 1.8 m/s/s, calculate how long it accelerated for.

Newton’s Laws

12. Explain Newton’s 3 Laws

13. Explain in terms of Newton’s First Law of Motion (inertia) why it is dangerous to have loose objects inside a moving car (ie explain what happens using inertia when the car stops suddenly)

Calculating force

14. A water filled balloon with an overall mass of 1kg undergoes an acceleration of 10m/s2. What force was required to do this?

Calculating acceleration from force

15. A loaded coal wagon with a total mass of 20tonnes (20 000kg) is pushed by a force of 300kN (300 000 newtons). What is the value of the acceleration?

Calculating mass from force

16. A 7.5N force is applied to a football, generating an initial acceleration of 10,/s2. What is the mass of the football?

Calculating Potential Energy

17. What is the potential energy of a 3 kilogram-ball that is 4.5 metres high at the top of a slope?

Calculating Kinetic Energy

18. What is the kinetic energy of a 1-kilogram ball is thrown into the air with an initial velocity of 30 m/sec?

Calculating speed from kinetic and potential energy

19. A 3 kilogram-ball that is 4.5 metres high at the top of a slope and is released to roll down. Assuming no energy is lost as friction, what would be the speed the ball reaches when it is rolling at the bottom of the slope?
