OWLv2 for Integrated Systems - User Guide for Students

GETTING STARTED

Welcome to OWLv2, an improved version of the OWLv1 chemistry learning system. OWL stands for Online Web-based Learning and is an integrated, online course system for teaching and learning chemistry disciplines. OWLv2 supplies you with the tools you need for studying class materials, taking assignments, and tracking your grades from wherever you have Internet access.

OWLv2's assignment- and grade-management features are integrated seamlessly into your institution's Learning Management System (LMS). You do not need a separate ID or password; you can access OWLv2 as soon as you log in to your account.

While working at your own pace, or within a schedule set-up by your instructor, you can work on step-by-step tutorials, interactive simulations, homework questions, read an interactive eBook, take exams, and track your overall course progress. OWLv2 gives you an easy- to-use, personalized online environment that you can manage to best suit your needs.

As a live, web-based program, OWLv2 is updated regularly with new features and improvements. Please refer to OWLv2's online Help for the most current information.

Note: It is important to always use the buttons and links provided in OWLv2 to close assignments or go to another page. If you use your browser's Close button or Back/Forward buttons instead, you may unintentionally lose work from your current session.

Audience

This document addresses the needs of OWLv2 students when taking and reviewing their assignments, accessing study materials, and tracking progress in their course.

Getting Started

Logging into Your Course for the First Time

When you are first accessing a new course, you will need to link your CengageBrain account with your campus Learning Management System (LMS). If you do not yet have a CengageBrain account, you can create one as part of this process.

Most courses offer the option of a free grace period that allows you to "try before you buy." The duration of the trial is 1 day per week of your course, with a maximum of 14 days -- beginning on the course start date. To be assured of uninterrupted access to your course, you need to purchase and submit an Access Code.

An Access Code is proof of purchase for your course materials, and some courses may require that you have an Access Code for registration (your instructor will inform you, if that's the case).

Your least expensive option for purchasing an Access Code is through the Cengage Learning website, however, it can also come bundled with your textbook or it can be purchased at your bookstore. When submitted, this code provides you with continuous access to your online course materials.

Note: If the grace period deadline passes before you have a chance to purchase your Access Code, your work is saved. However, you can no longer enter the course until a code is submitted.
