3450:221 Calculus I: Analytic Geometry 4 credits Summer 13

TEXT: Calculus: Early Transcendentals, Seventh Edition, by James Stewart. The bookstore should have a number of copies, and there should be plenty online. (Note: this is NOT the same as Stewart’s Calculus: Single Variable that you may find floating around, so don’t get that book, as it will do you no good.)

PREREQUISITES: [3450:149 with a grade of C- or better], or Placement. You are responsible for having the appropriate prerequisite. Not having the right prerequisite may cause the withdrawal of your name from the course without refund.

CALCULATOR: The use of a graphing calculator is permitted but not required.

OFFICE HOURS TBA. If you cannot make the posted office hours, send me an email and we can try to figure out a time to meet.

Tests and Quizzes: There will be three one-hour tests, and a uniform comprehensive final exam. The final exam is Friday, August 4th in class. In addition a quiz, based on the homework, will be given once or twice a week. Make-up quizzes will not be given, though the lowest quiz grade will be dropped.

Homework: Homework will be assigned once or twice a week on the webpage



Homework will not be collected, however, the quizzes will be based on the homework problems.

GRADES: Each of the one-hour tests will be worth 100 points, the final 200 points, the quizzes will be worth a total of 100 points (after rescaling if necessary). This gives a total of 600 points for the semester. Quizzes are based on all problems assigned. The final scale will be
