AP? CALCULUS BCWillow Glen High SchoolMs. ArroyoWebsite: wghsarroyo.E-Mail: barroyo@Phone: Ext x67702Office: Z102Office Hours: Email for Appointment OverviewCalculus is a branch of mathematics focused on limits, functions, derivatives, integrals, and infinite series. It has two major branches, differential calculus and integral calculus, which are related by the fundamental theorem of calculus. Calculus is the study of change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape, and algebra is the study of operations and their application to solving equations. Calculus has widespread applications in science, economics, and engineering and can solve many problems for which algebra alone is insufficient. PrerequisitesBefore studying calculus, all students should complete algebra, geometry, trigonometry, analytic geometry and elementary functions. These functions include linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric and piecewise-defined functions. In particular, before studying calculus, students must be familiar with the properties of functions, the algebra of functions and the graphs of functions. Students must also understand the language of functions (domain and range, odd and even, periodic, symmetry, zeros, intercepts and so on) and know the values of the trigonometric functions at the numbers 0, /6 , /4 , /3 , /2 , and their multiples. TI-84+ is what will be used in classBehavior Expectations 1. POSITIVE: Respect everyone at all times!2. PROMPT: Be on time and ready to begin work prior to entering the classroom3. PREPARED: Show up with your supplies & completed work4. PRODUCTIVE: Do your best work, 100% of the time... no excuses!!5. PROACTIVE: Ask for help or support when needed and make up all missed work and lessons.Electronic PolicyElectronic devices of any type will not be permitted in the classroom. After the first offense, the student will be able to pick up the device after school. The second time, the device will go to Mr. Gallegos. Parents will be notified if further offenses occur.Grading Breakdown Students must legibly show their work following conventional mathematical notation on all assignments to receive credit. This policy is strictly enforced. Students will be informed as to what constitutes conventional mathematical notation the first days of the course.Tests and Quizzes: Quizzes will typically be given every week. One or more tests will be given for every unit of study, typically every 3-4 weeks. Each semester, a cumulative final will be given. Assessments may not be retaken.Classwork and Homework: Assignments consist of a mixture of individual and/or group work as well as homework. Homework assignments are posted on my website. Students are encouraged to work in groups on most assignments, especially homework; this is to facilitate understanding when faced with challenging exercises – it is not an endorsement of copying other’s work. Students who complete their homework successfully perform better in class and on assessments (quizzes, tests, final). Makeup/Late Work Policy Late work is not accepted except for excused absences; hence, students are not permitted to make up any missed assessment (quiz or test) except in the case of an excused absence. Students are advised to inform me prior to any planned, excused absence to ensure they know of upcoming assignments or assessments. Likewise, it is a student’s responsibility to speak with me on the first day they return to class to learn of any missed assignments or assessments. Students must submit work that was due on the day(s) they were absent on the day they return to class; otherwise, it will not be accepted. Students with an excused absence must make up any missed assessment within two school days unless otherwise agreed to by me. Always remember…If someone or something in class is stopping you from succeeding, please come and see me immediately. I will do everything in my power to fix the situation. We are all here to learn and help each other succeed.Britzia ArroyoMathematics TeacherPlagiarism/Cheating Any form of plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in: Immediate confiscation of assignment and a zero in the grade book.Student will not receive a second chance to complete assignment.Principal will be notified and the offense will be added to the student's records.TutorialIn order to receive extra help or makeup up quizzes/tests during tutorial, you must sign up for tutorial via the tutorial app. Use the link below to sign up for tutorial. Expect to stay the entirety of the tutorial period. and StudentsNote to students:My goal for the year is to help you learn and be successful. Although this may not be easy, I believe that all of you can succeed. Please come to me with any questions that you have so we can make your learning experience as beneficial as possible.Note to Parents/Guardians:I would like to see each of my students be successful and confident in mathematics, and I am looking forward to working with you to make this happen. As stated in this syllabus, students will have homework everyday and the assignments will be recorded in the grade book every other week. Please encourage your student to complete their homework, as it is vital to their success on tests, quizzes, and in class. You will be able to view your student’s grades online and verify that homework is being completed. If possible, email is the most efficient way to reach me. Please email me with questions or concerns. I have read through the contents of this syllabus. I understand and accept the policies and procedures regarding this Calculus class.
