Our Back to School Poem the participants wrote:

Summer for the kids has come to an end,

We’ll see all of the buses coming round the bend.

Backpacks, rulers, pencils and more,

Sneakers, clothes, shopping galore.

Teachers, happy, students, nervous,

Everyone ready to give their service.

Lunches all packed and ready to go,

Doors will be open for the day to flow.

There’s usually no homework on the first day,

Well, there is for parents, but not students anyway.

Soon, pools will close and leaves will turn,

The new year in full swing, to once again begin to learn.

Notes from the Nurse

Geriatric Dental Hygiene1

We had a wonderful visit from local dental hygienists at our most recent Caregiver Support group, and we thought that supplemental information might be useful for our families.

Ongoing research suggests that periodontal bacteria entering the bloodstream may be linked to conditions such as respiratory disease, diabetes, heart disease, increased risk of stroke, and osteoporosis. Studies further suggest that periodontal (gum) bacteria can pose a threat to people whose health is already compromised by these conditions. In light of this growing body of research, comprehensive dental care becomes increasingly important to help improve an older individual’s quality of life and outlook.

A natural part of aging can be dramatically diminished pain perception, which can easily mask the need for professional dental care. Also, people with dementia may not be able to express feelings of pain. Many individuals accept oral problems and tooth loss as inevitable results of aging, making dental visits seem unimportant. Regular dental appointments become increasingly important with age.

This also holds true for elderly individuals with dentures who believe their prostheses to be a final cure for tooth loss and see no need to return to the dentist for regular check-ups. While it is true that more elderly people are keeping their teeth than ever before, the number of people wearing full or partial dentures is on the rise as well. The Centers for Disease Control reports that in 1991, 33.6 million people needed one or two complete dentures, and this number is predicted to reach 44 million by 2020.

With patients who wear complete or partial dentures it is important to learn proper care and maintenance procedures. In particular, it is advisable to schedule oral re-evaluations for denture patients when on bisphosphonate therapy for osteoporosis.

We are hearing from families that it is difficult to find dental professionals who can treat individuals with dementia; if any one has any suggestions, could you let the nurses know?
