LETTER TO PARENTS AND STUDENTS

Your student has chosen to apply for the Dual Enrollment Program at Saks High School. The choice requires enormous initiative and motivation. This program extends the educational opportunities available to high school students be allowing them to pursue college-level studies while still in secondary school. College credit can be earned by acquiring a grade of “C” or above.

To be eligible for the Dual Enrollment Program, the following criteria must be met:

• Must meet JSU entrance requirements

• Must have a minimum “B” average in core high school courses

• Must have passed corresponding section or ALL sections of AHSGE as stated by JSU

• Must have required score on either ACT/SAT or placement test (Math, English only)

• Must complete required forms

• Must have instructor approval (Ford for history and English; Batchelor for math)

Parents should be involved with the student’s progress during the year. Parents also need to be aware that the increased workload of these courses could become insurmountable if the student should fall behind. It is important that parents realize that these are college courses and will be assessed by college standards. It is unrealistic to expect “straight A’s” when dealing with the required material. Only those students willing to work hard and on their own will attain grades in the 85 to 95 category. Most grades will fall in the 70 to 85 range.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH CAREFULLY AND COMPLY FULLY

Students must complete the application by May 14 so that SHS can schedule your child into the appropriate class(es). This may be done online at . You must pay a one-time fee of $30.00 when you register. In addition, it will be necessary to collect tuition in order to have the students properly enrolled at Jacksonville State University. This will be paid following the instructions below. You must register and make tuition payment prior to the first day of school at SHS. Tuition for one semester 3 hour course is approximately $390 (which may change over the summer). If a parent/guardian works at the University, the tuition is reduced by half (give name and department of employee). PACT may also be used, but you must inform PACT immediately that you will be utilizing it for the fall semester at JSU.

Should you have any questions, contact Mrs. Ford at 741-7039 or lford.sh@calhoun.k12.al.us.
