Crime in California

2021

Crime in California 2021 presents an overview of the criminal justice system in California. Current year

statistics, provided by California law enforcement agencies, are presented for reported crimes, arrests,

dispositions of adult felony arrests, adult probation, criminal justice personnel, civilians¡¯ complaints

against peace ofcers, domestic violence-related calls for assistance, anti-reproductive-rights crimes,

law enforcement ofcers killed or assaulted and violent crimes against senior citizens.

The violent crime rate increased 6.7

percent in 2021 (from 437.0 in 2020 to

466.2 in 2021) (Table 2).

The property crime rate increased 3.0

percent in 2021 (from 2,114.4 in 2020 to

2,178.4 in 2021) (Table 2).

The homicide rate increased 9.1 percent

in 2021 (from 5.5 in 2020 to 6.0 in 2021)

(Table 2).

The burglary rate decreased 5.3 percent in

2021 (from 365.4 in 2020 to 346.2 in 2021)

(Table 2).

The rape rate increased 8.6 percent in 2021

(from 33.8 in 2020 to 36.7 in 2021) (Table

2).

The motor vehicle theft rate increased 8.2

percent in 2021 (from 422.4 in 2020 to

457.1 in 2021) (Table 2).

The arson rate decreased 4.4 percent (from

29.6 in 2020 to 28.3 in 2021) (Table 2).

The 2021 total arrest rate of 2,606.3 is 7.3

percent lower than the 2020 total arrest

rate of 2,812.3 (Table 17).

From 2020 to 2021, the adult and juvenile

total arrest rates decreased 6.8 and 24.9

percent, respectively (from 3,163.7 and

614.5 in 2020 to 2,949.6 and 461.2 in 2021)

(Table 17).

The total felony arrest rate decreased

2.7 percent in 2021 (from 901.2 in

2020 to 877.2 in 2021), while the total

misdemeanor arrest rate decreased 9.4

percent in 2021 (from 1,903.0 in 2020 to

1,725.0 in 2021) (Table 17).

The total violent ofense arrest rate

decreased 9.1 percent in 2021 (from 339.0

in 2020 to 308.1 in 2021). The homicide

arrest rate decreased 3.8 percent in 2021

(from 5.3 in 2020 to 5.1 in 2021), while the

robbery and assault arrest rates decreased

17.1 and 8.1 percent, respectively, in 2021

(from 45.1 and 276.5 in 2020 to 37.4 and

254.2 in 2021) (Table 22).

The total property ofense arrest rate

decreased 8.9 percent in 2021 (from 210.2

in 2020 to 191.5 in 2(021). The burglary

arrest rate decreased 18.7 percent in 2021

(from 61.5 in 2020 to 50.0 in 2021), while

the arson arrest rate increased 3.4 percent

in 2021 (from 5.9 in 2020 to 6.1 in 2021)

(Table 22).

The motor vehicle theft arrest rate

decreased 6.6 percent in 2021 (from 52.9 in

2020 to 49.4 in 2021) (Table 22).

*Population at risk means those between the ages of 10-69.
