Math – 6th grade

Earth Science – 6th grade

Ms. Monroe

Course syllabus: August – December

Chapter 1: Science is Everywhere

Week 1 (August 21 – 24)

• Homework assignment for chapter 1: Choose one scientist who is either an oceanographer, astronomer, geologist, or meteorologist (all specializing in one of the four branches of earth science.) Prepare a 3-minute oral presentation including accomplishments and contributions this scientist has made to his/her area of expertise. You must have a visual aid such as a poster, power point, or chart. Due date: Sept. 12th

Week 2 (August 27 – 31)

Chapter 2: The Science Toolbox

Week 3 (September 4 – 7)

Week 4 (September 10 – 14)

• Homework project due Sept. 12

• Chapter test Sept. 14

Chapter 3: Introducing Earth

• Homework assignment: A bathymetric map shows the depths of a body of water such as a lake or an ocean. Bathymetric maps use contour lines to show depth. Create your own bathymetric map of an imaginary lake with depths in meters. Use figure 3.15 as a guide. Due Oct. 4

Week 5 (September 17 – 21)

Week 6 (Sept. 24 – 28)

Week 7 (Oct. 1 – 5)

• Homework project due Oct. 4

• Unit I test

Chapter 4: Heat

Week 8 (Oct. 8 – 12)

Week 9 (Oct. 15 – 16)

• Chapter 4 assessment

Chapter 5: Density and Buoyancy

• Homework assignment: Using no more than 24” of duct tape or masking tape and no more than 10 drinking straws, construct a boat that will push aside enough water to give an upward buoyant force that will support its weight and float when tested in class. Accompany your boat with a paragraph explaining buoyancy and why some things float and others sink. Include the vocabulary words volume, mass, neutral buoyancy, and density in your writing. Explain what attributes will make your boat buoyant. Boat and paragraph due Nov. 1.

Week 10 (Oct. 22 – 26)

Week 11 (Oct. 29 – Nov. 2)

• Homework project due Nov. 1

• Chapter 5 assessment

Chapter 6: Earth’s Surface and Heat

• Homework assignment: The map on page 132 in your text shows the world surface currents. Use the map to plot a course for circumnavigating the globe from the coast of Massachusetts to the coast of California. As you choose your currents, draw them on the bathymetric map provided. Use red colored pencil to indicate a warm current, blue to indicate a cold current, and black to indicate other currents. Make sure to label each current you choose for your voyage. Due Nov. 29.

Week 12 (Nov. 5 – 9)

Week 13 (Nov. 13 – 16)

Week 14 (Nov. 26 – 30)

• Homework project due Nov. 29

• Chapter 6 assessment

Chapter 7: Heat Inside the Earth

• Homework assignment: Make a 3-dimensional “cut away” model showing the Earth’s layers. Use the diagram on page 150 of your text for reference. Include all the layers and label them. For your materials, you will need to be creative. Due Dec. 20.

Week 15 (Dec. 3 – 7)

Week 16 (Dec. 10 – 14)

Week 17 (Dec. 17 – 21)

• Homework project due Dec. 20

• Unit 2 test
