Course Description

Welcome to Geometry! I am excited about working with you this year as we progress through a set

of topics and concepts that will be fairly different from algebra last year. At the same time, it will be

fun to have the opportunity to put to use some of the skills and concepts you have learned in

previous math courses. We will be studying the mathematics that most colleges expect students to

have mastered, and much of it can be applied to everyday life and many careers as well.

Students in this course will work to achieve mastery of High School Geometry Common Core

Standards. Geometry standards, as outlined in the Common Core State Standardsi, focus on six

critical areas: (1) congruence; (2) similarity, right triangles, and trigonometry; (3) circles; (4)

expressing geometric properties with equations; (5) geometric measurement and dimension; and (6)

modeling with geometry.

Students will apply the eight mathematical practicesii throughout the course to develop analytical

skills, consistently use academic language, engage in research, create and solve authentic and

unique situations, and write to explain/defend/prove one¡¯s assertions.

Composition Book To be used for warm-ups, notes, and homework assignments.

Pencils All work must be done in pencil.

Protractor, Compass, Ruler, Colored Pen, Graph Paper, Lined Paper

1 or 1 ? inch Binder A small zipper pocket is helpful for holding smaller items.

5 Dividers

Scientific Calculator A graphic calculator, TI 84 or TI 83, is not needed for this course. A

scientific calculator, such as a TI 30x, will be used occasionally.

Calculator Appropriateness: While a scientific calculator is required for this course, it is

important that math students not become dependent upon their calculators. Therefore, you will

find that there will be limited calculator use on quizzes and tests. Please be prepared for this by

only using your calculator for problems in the homework that are obviously calculator worthy.

Approximately 99% of the math you do this year should be done without the aid of a calculator.

Keep your basic math skills sharp!

Additional Resources

As a traditional textbook, we will be using Discovering Geometry, Third Edition by Key Curriculum

Press. We will also supplement with other learning opportunities to ensure that all standards are

covered.

Homework

The majority of homework will be practice that is not completed in class. Therefore, it is important

to use your class time wisely. Skill practice may be assigned as homework. Additionally, students

may be asked to watch a video lesson at home in order to prepare for class the following day.

Homework and activities will be posted on our class website

. This is the place to check if you are absent or forget

the homework for the day.

Grading

Students and parents are encouraged to check grades regularly using Skyward online access.

Grading Percentages

20% - Daily Assignments, Activities, Homework, and Warm-Ups

Assignments are given frequently and are due the following day at the beginning of class.

Assignments are to be done in pencil only, neatly and accurately with work shown. Every

student can earn a 100% on homework if it¡¯s completed on time! Each assignment will

be worth a total of 4 points and will be based on correctness and completion. If an

assignment is completed on time (before the next class usually) and you score less than a 4,

you may do corrections in colored pen to earn a 4. Corrections are accepted up until the

next test. 9.26 CHANGE Daily assignments are worth 1 point if complete (0 if missing

or incomplete) and larger assignments may be worth more points (based on rubric).

65% - Quizzes and Tests

Quizzes will be announced in advance and given periodically throughout units to check on

student progress toward meeting standards. Students can retake portions of quizzes after

filling out a retake form. The problems will be similar to the original quiz. Tests will be given

at the end of each unit. Portions of tests can be retaken after a retake form is completed.

Problems will be similar to the original test. If you miss a quiz or test due to an excused

absence, you must take the assessment in advance or immediately upon return.

9.26 CHANGE No retakes on tests (only quizzes)

15% - Semester Final

This test will cover the material from the entire semester. This will be given in late January

to follow the high school pacing of the course. Another course final will be given in June.

Final grades are determined using the following scale:

Late Work

The Skyridge late work policy allows two make-up days for each day that a student has an

excused absence. It is the student¡¯s responsibility to arrange time before school, at lunch time,

during the first 20 minutes of FLEX, or after school to obtain work missed while he/she was gone.

Checking the class website is also a great way to see what was missed.

It is very important that middle school students gain personal responsibility for their learning.

I am looking forward to learning math with you this year! We will have a year filled with new

experiences, successes, challenges, and memorable moments. Please ask any questions or

express any concerns you may have regarding this course, material, or middle school life in

general. It is important to ask questions! I am available before school on most days, during

lunch (by appointment), and after school on Thursdays and Fridays. I am here to help! I

encourage you to make this a great school year by being actively involved in the learning

process and our school.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Jana Wells
