Annual Asbestos Notification

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT ASBESTOS IN SCHOOLS

June 1, 2017

This information (dated June 1, 2017) is provided as partial fulfillment of AHERA ( Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act ) rules requiring annual notification of workers and building occupants or their legal guardians of inspections, response actions, and post response action activities, including periodic

re-inspections and surveillance activities that are planned or in progress.

A periodic surveillance of asbestos containing materials is performed in all district buildings every six months. This is done to ensure that asbestos containing materials are maintained in good condition.

A complete re-inspection of all Eugene School District 4-J buildings was conducted in the summer of 2015 and will occur every 3 years. The re-inspections are conducted by an AHERA Accredited Inspector. The results of the re-inspection will be included in the AHERA Management Plan. A copy of the AHERA Management Plan is available in the office of each School and at the Eugene School District Facilities Management Office located at 715 West 4th Street, Eugene, Oregon 97402.

Over the past year, the School District has removed asbestos containing materials from the following areas due to maintenance and /or renovation activities: Camas Ridge elementary school ( removal of asbestos containing floor tile and floor tile mastic ); Awbrey Park elementary school ( removal of asbestos containing floor tile, floor tile mastic ); McCornack elementary school ( removal of asbestos containing thermal system insulation ); ATA Jefferson middle school ( removal of asbestos containing wall material ); North Eugene high school ( removal of asbestos containing floor tile and floor tile mastic ).

This summer, there will be a complete removal of all asbestos containing material at River Road elementary school and ATA middle school before the demolition of the buildings.

The district continues to update and improve the AHERA Asbestos Management Plans. This work includes the sampling of materials that were originally assumed to contain asbestos. The improvements in the AHERA Asbestos Management Plans are intended to make them easier to use by District custodial and maintenance workers and outside contractors that perform work within district buildings.

If you have any questions regarding asbestos or the District’s asbestos program, please call Doug Lemonds at 790-7432 at Facilities Management.
