Exercise 1.

THE MIGHTY ARMY

On February 23, 1779, a group of men was walking towards a fort held by British soldiers in Vincennes, Indiana. The men were Americans. Their leader was a man named George Rogers Clark. Clark and his small army of about 125 men were determined to capture the fort called, Sackville. To complete this task, they had marched across Illinois through mud and rain, crossing dangerous rivers on foot and by canoe.

The men were tired and hungry. By the time they reached near Vincennes, they had been without food for two days. Yet, before they could attack the fort, they had to capture the town. Clark was a daring and intelligent man. He made a plan and sent a message to the people of the town. In his message, he advised them that those who were with the British should go to the fort immediately. All others were to stay inside their homes. Clark also warned the people that his army was big and powerful!

To prove this to the townspeople that he had a big army, he made his tired men march in and out of the hills around Vincennes. They marched from early afternoon until evening. From their marching, the townspeople had the idea that Clark's army really had thousands of soldiers. Clark also ordered some men to carry flags on the poles so that the townspeople could see them constantly from the town.

Clark's trick worked and the townspeople thought he really had a mighty army! They got afraid and surrendered to Clark and his men. This all happened without firing a single shot. Then Clark and his men created a scene of a violent battle outside the fort. On February 25, the fort also surrendered to the small American army. They accepted defeat without fighting. It is interesting to know that they could hold out (the fort) another six months.
