Activity 1.9 Design Innovation

Activity 1.7 Design InnovationIntroductionName a product or process that is truly an original invention. You possibly named an Xbox or an iPhone. These products are examples of high-quality consumer products; however, neither is an invention. Both are innovations: an improvement of an existing technological product, system, or method of doing something. The Xbox is an adaptation of previous gaming systems. An iPhone adapts mobile phone technology dating back to 1973.An invention is a new product, system, or process that has never existed before, created by study and experimentation. An example of an invention is a nanobot. Robots of a size comparable to atoms had not been accomplished previously. The first wheel would be an invention. The modification to make the wheel out of aluminum alloy and cover it with a synthetic rubber tire is an innovation. In this activity your team will research an original invention and show the timeline of subsequent innovations.EquipmentComputer with Internet accessColor pencils, markers, paper, pensProcedureAs a group select an invention that your team will research. When was the product invented? What need/problem did the product address? What did they do to address the need/problem before the invention?Who invented the product (person or company)? What materials were originally used to make the product? How was the product was originally made? Which of the four major engineering discipline were most important to the creation and innovation of the product. It might be more than one. What impact has this invention and its innovation had on society (people) and the environment (nature)? What were the major innovations? What innovations do you predict for this product over the next 100 years?Include picturesCreate a handmade timeline showing the evolution of the product. The timeline should include the original invention, important innovations, and the current product. You can print out some items from the computer to glue to your timeline but some items must also be drawn. The timeline should have annotations. The annotations could be sentences or just words to describe the evolution of the product. ................
