BRAZIL PLANTATION FOREST STUDY TOUR – 30 March – 06 April 2008

ITINERARY & STUDY PROGRAM –

VISITING BRAZILIAN FOREST SECTOR OPERATIONS IN THE SOUTH

(subject to final scheduling adjustments)

30 December 2007

BACKGROUND

• The program follows the outline in the Brazil Plantation Forest Study Tours IV brochure. Visiting arrangements have been established and confirmed on a preliminary basis by the leading forestry organizations, with a few modifications pending final scheduling/ availability.

• The program focus is on the forest industry of Southern Brazil including the profitability of owning and growing plantation forest in Brazil, for both Southern pine and eucalyptus species. It focuses on the -advancing, intensive-forestry technology that has pushed Brazil into a global leadership role. The tour includes plantation visits as well as businesses that process the logs and generate revenues to support increasing forest investment. There will be special evening presentations to complement the program, with research/technology updates, and several special interest options have been proposed in the agenda.

• A background data book will be provided, Brazil’s Forest Industry – Background Fact Book for 2008 Plantation Forest Study Tour (95 pages), with relevant industry statistics and background data for the tour, including selected financial data and company information, maps, plus regional / country data. It is a unique forest industry review package compiled by Bob Flynn ( international expert) without equal in either English or Portuguese. In addition, each of the major companies during the visit will provide more detailed data related to their operations, which ill be summarized on a CD and sent to each participant. .

• The tour itinerary starts and ends in Curitiba, Parana State (250 km south of Sao Paulo City) The tour proceeds by special tourism coach to visit forests in the Curitiba region and proceeds 240 km to the north in Parana State to visit Klabin’s Parana Division for 2 days. The first day visit will involve pine forestry and the second day eucalyptus. It might be possible for a sub-group to visit to INPACEL forestry operations in which 80% has been purchased by Arauco (Chile) from Stora Enso (EU). Following this northern extension, the travel is to the south into northern Santa Catarina State for Arauco’s Placas do Parana (south Parana), Rigesa , and finally Battistella forests in Rio Negrinho region –SC.. Intermediate stops include the Masisa MDF/OSB operations in Ponta Grossa and possibly the Sao Bento do Sul furniture nucleus. The final destination is the Port of Sao Francisco and then a return to the Curitiba Airport for departure to out-bound flights including the north tour.(flight listings included at the end of the itinerary as well as hotel contact details)

• There are various new developments to review, including the Klabin expansion project doubling the paper production of liquid packaging paper in Telemaco Borba as well as re-engineering their logging operations and related forestry research, and working with vegetative propagation for pine. PISA is also doubling it newsprint capacity with a second line and facing fibre supply expansion. Rigesa is one of the pine and eucalyptus leaders in genetics and forest management with a continuum of new developments. Notably their success with E dunnii rivals the north with MAI’s of 50 m3 on 7 years and similar productivity for special clones in 15 – 16 year sawlog regimes. Optional visits include more logging and forestry, plus p & p, and solid wood operations, as lumber/ millwork and plywood, and RTA furniture (ready to assemble).

• Please advise us of your expected arrival time in Curitiba and entry/exit flight details.
