December, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Elliott Point is proud to announce our Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Alyssa Porter. Mrs. Porter is a 5th grade teacher, and teaches ELA and Social Studies. Mrs. Porter is known for her great lessons, and strong teaching. It is a great honor to be recognized by peers as an outstanding educator. Thank you, Mrs. Porter, for being our Teacher of the Year!

Elliott Point is proud to announce our Education Staff Professional of the Year, Mrs. Traci Drew. This recognition is a huge honor since Mrs. Drew was chosen by her peers. Mrs. Drew works as a Classroom Assistant, and helps throughout our school in many different capacities. She is always happy and cheerful, bringing positive vibes to our school. Thanks for all that you do Mrs. Drew, to help Elliott Point teachers, staff, parents, and students!

Winter Break is almost here! There will be no school between Dec. 21, 2020 – Jan. 3, 2021. We will be leaving for Winter Break on Friday, Dec. 18th, As you know, we missed a week of school due to Hurricane Sally. While we are seeking a waiver from the DOE for loss of instructional time, it has yet to be approved. Based on those missed days, we will not have early dismissal on December 18th.

Students and teachers return to school on Monday, Jan. 4, 2021.

We love having our families involved in their students’ education! According to many studies, students tend to do better in school when their parents are involved, regardless of family income or background. The state Department of Education shared some of the benefits:

• Higher grades, test scores and graduation rates.

• Better school attendance.

• Increased motivation and self-esteem.

• Lower rates of suspension.

• Decreased use of drugs and alcohol.

• Fewer instances of violent behavior.

The Eagle News will be published and sent home at the beginning of each month. Important events and information are posted on our website and our Facebook page, Elliott Point Elementary Events and Spirit Page. Please “like” us! I hope all of our families enjoy this festive time of the year and days together. Happy Holidays!

Sincerely,

Kathy Ard, Principal

Feeling Ill? Waiting for a COVID-19 Result

If your child is not feeling well, please keep them at home. Students with COVID like symptoms will be sent home and unable to return without a negative COVID test, or doctor’s note, or 14 days out of school. If you are waiting for the results of a COVID test for your student, your child must stay home until you receive the results. If COVID testing, your child must have a PCR test. Rapid tests are not accepted by the Okaloosa Department of Health.

Heaters Off

Please turn off your heaters as you enter the car drop-off. The hot heater air is causing high readings on our thermometers. This holds you up as we have to let the students’ foreheads cool off. Thank you!

Hands Free Area in the Car Line

Deputy Swint wants to remind you that the school is a hands free area, meaning no cell phones should be in your hands while operating the vehicle. If this persists, then he may be forced to take action. Thank you for helping keep our students and staff safe!

Don't Get Benched with the Wrong Shoes

With the cooler weather we’re having, many students are wearing boots, some with heels that are not safe for PE activities.  Please make sure your student wears safe playing shoes (covered back and toe, with heels less than 2 inches) to PE so that he or she may participate safely!

Read, Read, and Read

Students will receive a Reading Log for the Winter Break on Dec. 17th. Please return the logs on Jan. 6th! Record the reading activities that your child completes on the log. Ten lucky readers will win pizza lunch with the principal in January!

School Advisory Council (SAC)

We will not have a SAC meeting in December but please mark your calendar for the January 26, 2021 meeting at 3:00 pm on Zoom.

Brrrrr!

Per district policy, PE classes and Recess may be held outdoors when the temperature reaches 40 degrees. Students need to bring a jacket to school on cold days. Due to COVID 19, we are unable to lend jackets to students. Please make sure your child’s name is clearly marked in the coat and accessories. If your child needs a coat, please contact our School Counselor, Mrs. Kerri Howell.

Treats at School

Due to COVID restrictions, any food coming into the building that is to be shared with students must be commercially purchased, and individually wrapped. This includes birthday treats, class snacks, or food for upcoming holiday parties. Please help us spread that word. We are having tons of cupcake packages that we have to turn away. Alternatives are individually bag of chips, Little Debbie type treats, individually packaged muffins, etc.

Box Tops for Education

Please bring in those Box Tops that you have collected around the house.  Box Tops for Education funds are used to purchase new books and resources for the Media Center.

Lunch Monitor Needed

Elliott Point is looking to hire another lunch monitor. It is a 2.5 hour shift. Please complete an application on if you are interested.

Student Grades

Have you checked your child’s grades online recently? To access your student's grades, you will need a UserID (Student Number) and password. If you have lost or do not know your UserID and password, you can obtain one by contacting your child’s teacher. You can also find their number on any old report card from our district. The password is defaulted to the last 4 digits of the student number. If you should have any questions concerning your child's grades, please contact your child's teacher. A feature within the Parent Portal allows parents to keep track of their child's grades by email notification. Simply sign up for the email notification by clicking the “Set up Email” link after you log in to the Parent Portal.

Dismissal

In order for your child to not miss instructional time, students will not be checked out from school after 1:50 PM. This is a safety concern due to the congestion around the school at dismissal time. Identification is always required to check out a student or have access on campus.

Transportation Changes

For the safety of our students, transportation changes must be in writing. Send a note with your student if they will be dismissing a different way. Once students have been loaded onto busses, they will not be removed for check out.
