To Whom It May Concern:

COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESSLAKEWOOD HIGH SCHOOLIn 2019-2020 we processed nearly 1697 college/scholarship applications and survived our seventh year of electronic submissions. Below are the directions we developed and revise annually to accomplish this feat and we ask you to follow them in submitting your applications. PLEASE let us know any questions, concerns, problems you may have. We look forward to continuing the streamlined, quicker and more reliable process that benefits all. Getting StartedLog on to Naviance, found under the Student Tab on the Lakewood High School website. Your initial login is your student number and your password is your eight-digit birth date unless you changed it. We found last year that students frequently forgot their log in information so please write it down, save it to your phone or just don’t change it. Once you are logged in, click on the College Tab at the top of the screen. Click on “Colleges I’m applying to” and list schools you are applying to. If you are using the Common Application, please complete the Common App Account Matching process. A few things need to be completed on Common App in order for the match to be successful. If you will not be using the Common Application, skip this part and click the “RED circle with a plus sign” link. You will see drop down menus. The drop down menu that says: “I’ll submit my application,” will default to: “I’m not sure yet”. You must change this to the appropriate response. If you are applying Common App, you MUST change this to “Via Common App.”Contact your teachers and counselors for letters of recommendations as early as possible with a minimum of four weeks in advance and comply with any information requests they may have, for example, the Request for Recommendation Form found in the Counseling Office or the Counselor Recommendation Questionnaire on Naviance. PLEASE do not ask for more letters than you will need; two teacher and one counselor letter in most cases will be the maximum you need for most colleges. However, you may NOT need one from your counselor, please check with your counselor first. LHS policy is NOT to release letters to students.See Ms. Schechter in the counseling office to pay a $3.00 application processing fee for every college you are applying to; this is different from the college’s application fee that you pay directly to them. She will ask you a number of questions at that time which will allow us to start our portion of the application process. She will also ask you to sign a FERPA Agreement Form in which you will waive or not waive your rights to see your letters of recommendation if you have not done so yet on Common App. This process is also known as filling out the “Green Sheets” and this is where you will list who will be writing your letters of recommendation (DO NOT do this via Common App!). However, you must ask teachers/counselor for a letter of recommendation in person BEFORE listing them on the green sheet. Students need to complete green sheets in the counseling office, so plan accordingly. The application materials submitted separately online by the student should include:The completed college application. Depending on the college(s) you are applying to, this may include an essay, resume/activity sheet, short answer questions, etc.Test scores if required directly from ACT or SAT. *Some colleges are requiring your test scores be sent directly from the testing agency and all tests you have taken may not appear on your Jeffco transcript (ACT Writing scores, SAT Subject Exams, AP/IB Test Scores do not). It is your responsibility to determine specific college requirements and take the necessary steps to supply what is missing. Students can download an unofficial transcript from their Infinite Campus portal, under the reports, click on “unofficial transcript”.The application fee, unless waived by the collegeThe Counseling Office will process and send:The high school transcriptACT/SAT Test scores that appear on your transcript.* A School/Counselor Report and recommendation, if requiredTeacher recommendations/evaluations, if requiredA profile of Lakewood High School Update your Naviance account throughout the process regarding your admission status at the colleges where you apply.Additional InformationDeadlines: All transcript and recommendation requests should be submitted to Mrs. Schechter and the recommenders a minimum of four weeks prior to any college application or scholarship deadline. Dates for typical college deadlines and the corresponding LHS deadline can be found on the pink request deadline page. More time is always appreciated. PLEASE NOTE: The Counseling Office will be closed for Winter Break from December 23 to January 6. It is important for you to plan in advance for any deadlines that fall during this time. Also, because computer systems notoriously crash during the busiest times, you are encouraged to submit your materials as early as possible- as will we.Counseling Office staff members will record the processing of all of our application materials. The student’s counselor will review all materials before submitting. This insures that the college or university will receive a complete package in a timely manner. Be AWARE that the counseling office may hold your application until ALL required materials (including letters of recommendations) are available to send.A $3.00 processing fee will be required for any transcript that is processed and submitted by the Counseling Office including transcripts sent with scholarship applications, military enlistments and NCAA/NAIA Eligibility applications. FYI- Official transcripts may not be given directly to students. Transcripts become unofficial immediately when handled by the student. In addition, we will not give transcripts to a college coach, military recruiter or any other entity without the student’s permission. See Mrs. Schechter to give permission.A Mid-Year Report Form, including 7th semester grades, will be required by many colleges whose application deadline is prior to the end of our fall semester. Counselors will automatically send this for Common App schools only. If you need a mid-year report for a non-Common App school, the student must request this. A Final Report/transcript will be sent to the school indicated by the student as their final choice after their graduation. There is not an additional charge for these submissions as long as you paid the initial $3.00 fee.We collect information from students on the outcome of their applications to help us advise future students. We also ask students to report any scholarships received for our graduation insert at the end of the year.Although this does not require the involvement of the Counseling Office, we strongly encourage students to register for the College Opportunity Fund (COF) now and file their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon after October 1 as possible. There will be a financial aid presentation for students and parents/guardians the evening of the Out of State College Fair on 10/3. We will also host a FAFSA Completion Workshop for families needing help in mid-MON APPLICATION Applicants: As mentioned previously, PLEASE DO NOT REQUST LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATIONS VIA COMMON APP. This causes major issues that impact other students who have asked for letters from the same teachers. ................
