PRACTICAL INFORMATION

FOR PARTICIPANTS

We welcome you to the Consultation Workshop.

Following, you will find some practical information regarding your participation in this event.

Arrival and departure

Saint Kitts’ modern international airport, Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw Airport (869-465-8121), is located on the northern outskirts of Basseterre. It is approximately 4 miles South of Frigate Bay. The following airlines connect Saint Kitts with these cities (some services are seasonal and only weekly):

• LIAT (465-8200; ) Antigua, St Thomas, Sint Maarten

The event will take place at the Saint Kitts Marriott Resort, Frigate Bay, Saint Kitts from 19 July to 22 April 2010.

As soon as you have made your corresponding flight reservations, kindly provide your flight arrival and departure details to the HIPCAR Project Assistant (email: nicole.morain@itu.int).

Requirements upon arrival at Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw Airport

• Citizens of Canada need only to present proof of citizenship – preferably a passport or birth certificate with the raised seal – in order to enter Saint Kitts.  If the birth certificate is used, it must be accompanied by a government issued photo ID.

• Citizens of the United States, however, are required to have passports in order to re-enter that country.  As such a valid passport is a required travel document when travelling to Saint Kitts.

• Present a valid passport with a valid visa (where applicable – see below).

• Additionally, proof of sufficient funds and a return or onward passage might be required.

Visa Information

Citizens of some countries are required to have visas in order to enter Saint Kitts.  However, citizens from countries that are members of certain international organizations might be eligible for exemption.  Please select ‘Ctrl’ and click on the appropriate category to see if your country is listed as an exempted country:  Commonwealth Countries; Organization of American States (OAS) Countries; Other Countries.

Airport Transfers

Taxi transportation from the airport is easily available just outside the arrivals area; taxi transportation to the airport from the city can be arranged in the lobby area of most hotels. The approximate cost from Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw Airport to the workshop venue is:

• Estimated taxi fare: 13.00  USD  (one way)

Airport Tax

There is a departure tax of $60 XCD (approx. $22 USD) payable in cash, or by credit card – Visa or MasterCard – at the airport.

The workshop venue is centrally located 10 -15 minutes from downtown and just 10 minutes from Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw Airport.

Participants’ entitlements

There is no Workshop participation fee for any of the participants.

Participants receiving fellowships from ITU will be provided with a return economy class ticket to Saint Kitts from their home countries as well as a Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA). This DSA is intended to cover all of the participant’s costs of accommodation, meals, local transportation, communications and incidentals. (Note: the cost of lunches and coffee breaks during the event will be covered separately by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports, IT, Telecommunications and Post and by ITU.)

Participants not covered by ITU fellowships will be required to pay their own travel, accommodation and other expenses.

Accommodation

Participants may stay at the accommodation of their choice, and are responsible for handling their hotel reservations directly. However, in order to facilitate access to the workshop venue, the ITU has blocked a limited numbers of rooms, at a special rate, at the Saint Kitts Marriott Resort. Please note that this room block is available until 02 July, on a first come first served basis. Participants are therefore encouraged to make all arrangements in a timely manner, to benefit from this preferred room rate.

Working Language

English is the official language of Saint Kitts.

The Workshop will be conducted in English.

In the spirit of efficiency and economy, the event will rely on Web transmission of documents.

Health & Accident Insurance

ITU can accept no responsibility for covering participants’ health & accident costs. All participants must therefore ensure that they are fully covered by health & accident insurance for the duration of their travel and their participation in the workshop.

Other Practical Information on the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis

• Climate & Traffic

Typical of the tropics, Saint Kitts enjoys generous amounts of warm weather cooled by ocean breezes for most of the year.

There is usual traffic congestion from approximately 7am to 9am, 12 noon – 1pm and from 4pm to 6pm, in the downtown district.

• Time

(-4 GMT). 4 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time Atlantic Standard Time throughout the year. Daylight Saving Time is not observed.

• Currency

The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar XCD$ or ECD. U.S. bills are accepted by most stores and businesses and change is given in E.C. currency. U.S. coins are not accepted.

(Exchange Rate: US$1 = $2.70 XCD approx. bank rate).

• Electricity

The domestic market is served by a 11 volt single phase supply. However, a 117 volt supply is available in most hotels.
