Catherine Bracy discussed the fact that Hackers are good citizens. A main rhetorical device she used in this speech was pathos. She spoke about things that tapped into the crowd’s emotions. She showed examples of hackers like people doing something mischievous or someone trying to steal your identity. Most people have a negative view of hacking but it can also be used for good. For every person trying to steal your identity, there is someone creating a code that can help find your loved ones in a disaster. This really tapped into the audience’s emotions because she is describing how hacking could significantly help someone in a time of need. She also explained how everyone in the room could be a civic hacker. You don’t have to be good with a computer to be a hacker because sometimes you can hack things in real life. Her examples of civic hacking ranged from Ben Franklin to citizens creating a database of answers to questions frequently asked about their cities. Showing these examples to the audience made them feel like they could really make a difference in the community by being a civic hacker. She used other devices in this speech to help persuade the audience. Another rhetorical device she used in this speech was logos. She gave statistics of years that Ben Franklin was effectively a civic hacker. In 1736 he designed a group called a brigade. He noticed that the city was having trouble putting out fires so he started the brigade for people to volunteer and help put out fires. These statistical facts enhanced her speech by showing that Ben Franklin, a coveted inventor, still volunteered to help in his community. Her speech was very good but there are a few things that I would change to make it a more effective persuasive speech.I thought her voice was monotonic and sometimes I got bored listening to her speech. Maybe if she changed her voice levels at points of emphasis it could help tap into the audience’s emotions. She could have also added some gestures or movements to help with the flow of her speech because she sometimes skipped over her words. If she sounded a little more enthusiastic about her speech, then it might have made a bigger impact with the audience. In the end I though her speech was very well spoken and she made very good points on why hackers could make good citizens. She definitely opened my eyes to see past the stereotypes that hackers are just people trying to steal things from you. Civic hacking can actually help members be participants in their community.
