I love my job

Jo Banks is a TV journalist. She’s been married to her husband, Graham, for ten years. In June 2003, she was organising a party to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary when the phone rang. She suddenly had to go to Italy to report on a fashion show. In the end, Graham and their friends and family had the party without Jo! During the party they switched on the TV. Jo was interviewing a famous fashion designer and talking about what was happening at the show.

Jo loves her job and says, ‘If you’re a journalist, you can’t say, “No, I’m busy. I can’t go to Italy tomorrow.” You have to be able to change your plans at the last minute. You don’t have to stay at home waiting for the phone to ring, but you must be flexible. I’m lucky because my friends and family understand when I can’t be with them. I’ve been a journalist since 1990 and they respect my job.’

Jo has already missed several weddings and other important events. If you invite Jo to your party, she might not come, but you’ll probably see her on TV the next day!

QUAKE

I interviewed Eric Jones, a survivor of the 1989 earthquake in San Francisco. Eric is a computer geek and he said that if he hadn’t been so interested in computers, he would have died that day. The earthquake happened at 5 p.m. local time on Tuesday 17th October. Two hours before, he’d gone to a business meeting. He had planned to go home after the meeting to finish work on a new computer program. However, when the meeting ended, he realised that he’d left the new computer program in his office. He’d planned to spend the evening working on the new program and so he decided to drive back to work to get it. At 5 p.m., Eric was opening the door to his office; at 5.03 p.m., Eric’s apartment was destroyed by the earthquake. Eric told me that luckily he was living on his own at the time and that most of his neighbours were still working. I asked him if he thought he was lucky. He said that fifty-seven people had died that day and if he hadn’t had such a bad memory, fifty-eight people would have died.

1 Eric Jones died in the 1989 earthquake. ______

2 A computer saved his life. ______

3 His meeting was cancelled. ______
