Lesson plan - Study Island

|Reading Lesson: Alphabetize Words |Grade Level: 2 |

Lesson Summary: Students will learn how to alphabetize lists of words using first and second letters. The teacher will provide a list of words beginning with

different letters and ask students to arrange them in correct order. The teacher will then provide a list with words that start with the same letter and ask

students to arrange them in correct order by using the second letter. The teacher will make use of the classroom word bank or word list for students to choose

words and arrange them correctly. Pairs of students will combine lists and arrange them correctly. Advanced learners will choose a topic, generate a list of words

connected to it, and arrange that list in correct order. For struggling students, the teacher will provide a list taken from the alphabetized list in the Closing

Activity and guide students in arranging the words in correct order.

Whole-Class Instruction

Materials Needed: paper and pencils

Procedure:

Presentation

Write a list of words on the board. Each word should begin with a different letter.

alphabetical order.

Guided Practice

Write another list of words on the board. This list should include words with the same first letter but a different second letter, such as cat, crack, and cub.

Choose students to alphabetize the list both verbally and on the board.

Point out the words in the classroom word bank or word wall. Ask students to pick six words from the list and create their own alphabetized lists.
