|Lesson Summary: Students will review how to arrange words in alphabetical order. Students will receive an index card with a word. Each will go to the board and |
|arrange and rearrange words until all words have been posted and arranged in correct order. Students will select topics and arrange words that belong with that |
|topic in correct order. Students will then play an alphabet maze game to reinforce skill. Advanced learners will create a word search puzzle and the teacher will |
|work with struggling learners by mixing up words used in Guided Practice and guiding students to arrange them in correct order. |

|Remind students that the letters in a word can be used to put words in alphabetical order. |

|List 6-8 words on the board. Ask students which word comes first in alphabetical order. Rewrite the list with the words in the correct order. |
|Whole-Class Instruction |
|Materials Needed: PowerPoint Alphabet Maze game*, index cards (one for each student in the class plus one), poster board, and tape |
|Procedure: |
|Presentation |
|Before class, write a word on each index card. Shuffle the cards. Display a large sheet of poster board in front of the class. |

|Give each student a card, saving one for you. Explain that you are going to put the words in alphabetical order. Place your card on the poster board to start. |
| |
|Guided Practice |
|Call each student to the board one at a time. Instruct each student to place his/her card on the board and to stack the cards in the correct alphabetical order. |
|Continue until all cards are on the board in order. |

|Independent Practice |
|Ask each student to select a topic, such as foods, sports, or types of clothes. Ask each student to list 8 words for each topic and write them in alphabetical |
|order. |

|Display the students’ lists and combine them into an alphabetized word bank. |

|Closing Activity |
|Using the PowerPoint*, play the Alphabet Maze game with the class. If possible, have students play game individually. If not, have students vote and teacher should|
|advance to the slide that received the most votes. |

|Materials Needed: list of words from the word bank, paper, and pencils |
|Procedure: |
|Ask students to choose 10 words from the word bank and create a word search puzzle incorporating the words. |

|Have students trade their puzzles with a classmate and solve each other’s puzzles. |
|Struggling Learner |
|Materials Needed: list of alphabetized words from the board |
|Procedure: |
|Copy the list of alphabetized words from the board in mixed-up order. Distribute the list to students and ask them to put the list in alphabetical order. Students |
|may work in pairs or groups. |
