Following the reports received from the readers and questions received from the applicants, the various forms involved in the application process now have been clarified and upgraded for the 2020 program. The 2019 Scholarship Committee was pleased to receive 36 applications. Of those, 1 application was ineligible and 4 were incomplete, leaving the 2018 Scholarship Committee 31 applications to review. The committee was pleased to award a total of $16,000.00 in Scholarships to 4 women: $4,500 for Doctoral scholarships and $3,500 for Master scholarships. Each winner was very pleased and grateful when told of the award decision. Four applicants received an honorable mention.CFUW Edmonton Undergraduate Entrance ScholarshipsIn the 1960s, CFUW Edmonton endowed an undergraduate entrance scholarship to the University of Alberta. In 2019 the University of Alberta awarded two undergraduate entrance scholarships and two additional scholarships for second year undergraduate students. The two second year students and one of the first year students received $1200; the other first year student received $2,000.CFUW Edmonton Dr. Geneva Misner ScholarshipFor several years a team of CFUW Edmonton members sought acknowledgement for Dr. Geneva Misner. In 1912 Dr. Misner became the first woman member of the academic staff at the University of Alberta, first as assistant professor of Classics (1912-20) and later as a full professor (1920-45). Her additional contributions to the University include serving as advisor to women students (1913-20) and as a member of the Senate (1926-28).At a Plaque unveiling ceremony and tea on April 28, 2013, the Garneau Community League presented CFUW Edmonton AAF with a generous donation in memory of Dr. Geneva Misner. This donation became the basis of a fund to create a new CFUW Edmonton Graduate Scholarship in Dr. Misner’s name. Fundraising for capital for this scholarship is ongoing. The Misner Fund ending balance for 2019 is $15,169. She held two degrees in classics at the University of Alberta (B.A. and M.A.). In the 1920’s Margaret went to Paris to study art and literature at the Sorbonne University and climb the Alps! She was the second woman in the world to climb Mt. Robson (and could have been first, had she not wished instead to party, and “run up next morning”). Margaret married the late Charles Brine, an Edmonton house builder whose financial success enabled her philanthropy. She was a major supporter of the opera, the symphony, the Art Gallery and others in Edmonton’s arts community, such as Anne Wheeler, filmmaker.“Money is something to give away, to improve something you see that is wrong with the world…all that matters, is beauty and being kind to people” (Margaret brine interviewed for the Edmonton Journal, 1984).Margaret was a member of the University Women’s Club of Edmonton (now known as CFUW Edmonton) for many years and a generous supporter of its Academic Awards projects. On her death in 1985, she left a major bequest for Academic Awards in her will. The Graduate Scholarships for Women offered each spring, as well as the largest CFUW Edmonton bursary, are named for her.CFUW Scholarship Committee Dates 2019DateActivityJanuary 19CFUW Meeting – request readers (sign- up sheet available)February 21application deadline February 9 – 23pick up applications in CFUW drop box February 22 - 27review applications, create spreadsheet with student data share Conflict of interest document with committeeFebruary 27first meeting with readers: review reading process, share out applications by MA, MSc, PhD Arts, PhD Science.February 28 – March 31readers review applications then meet in groups to decide on winner and runner-up in category (MA, MSc, PhD Arts/Sci)March 31 or April 1second meeting of readers – accept recommendations, 1 scholarship winner per group and 1 honorable mention per groupApril 1 - 2 present names of 4 winners to AAF Executive for approval (can be done by email)April 2 - 7 notify winners by telephone and email letter - also to those listed to be notified (profs, advisors etc. - remind scholars of May BBQ cheque presentation, and inform all about January 2020 CFUW AAF meeting with scholarship winner presentationsApril 2 - 7 notify “Honorable Mention” applicants by emailBefore year endcreate a report on the 2019 Scholarship process2019 CFUW Margaret Brine Scholarship Recipients2019 CFUW Edmonton Margaret Brine Scholarship WinnersMASTER OF ARTS – Katelin KarbonikHuman Ecology, Thesis title: Clothing the Medieval Body: A Reconstruction of the Doublet of Charles de BloisMASTER OF SCIENCE – Brooke Biddlecombe Biological Science, Thesis title is: Sea Ice Fragmentation and Polar Bear Movement in Hudson BayPHD ARTS – Janine TineEarly Childhood Education, Thesis title: Parents’ Understandings of their Bicultural ChildrenPHD SCIENCE – Ilara RabinoBioengineering Chemical and Material, Thesis title: Development of an Antimicrobial Face Mask Filter for Respiratory Protection2019 CFUW Edmonton Margaret Brine Scholarship Honourable MentionsPhD Arts – Irene Wolfstone, Education Policy Studies, Thesis title: Re-Storying Indigenous Matricultures: Exploring the Conditions of Cultural Continuity and the Capacity for Climate Change Adaptation PhD Science – Emma Schmidt, Neuroscience, Thesis title: Mental Health and Microbiome Changes Following Spinal Cord Injury Master of Arts – Marina Saporito, Native Studies, Thesis title: Racism Toward Aboriginal Hockey Players in CanadaMaster of Science – Claudia Holody, Pediatrics, Thesis title: Developmental Programming of Cardiac Mitochondrial Function by Perinatal Iron Deficiency: Implications for Adult DiseaseThe CFUW Edmonton Undergraduate Entrance ScholarshipAwarded by the University of Alberta, this scholarship is contingent upon superior academic achievement and was originally awarded to a first-year student.
