Product Class: Types of products or services that Statistics Canada produces.

- (Books/reports and their electronic or microfiche versions):

This category includes mainstream publications, including serials, analytical studies, research papers and records of proceedings.

Fixed product:

A standard product in any medium with a fixed price, which is held in stock, and distributed by Subject Matter Divisions and/or Statistics Canada Regional Reference Centres is considered to be a “fixed product”. Basic summary tabulations, electronic shelf tables and paper shelf tables fall into this Product Class.

Custom Retrievals:

These are services provided in response to the client’s specific requirements. Such services require that Statistics Canada personnel produce custom-tailored analyses or sets of data derived from Statistics Canada databases in accordance with client defined parameters.

Microdata File:

These contain records of responses to Statistics Canada’s surveys purged of individual information to ensure confidentiality.

INternal Documents:

This group of products consists for the most part publications that are generically called “grey literature”, for example internal reports, conference papers, annual reports or uncollected working papers. The material is likely to be available only from the Statistics Canada Library and Information Centre.

Surveys:

These are special surveys which are sponsored by various clients under contract, to provide statistical data that is not part of an existing national program.

OtHer:

This is used for all other activity that Statistics Canada does, for example external recovery of salary and conference room rentals. Workshops and conferences fall into this category.

Unique Number:

A unique number applied to that product or service.

For books/reports (products with the product class designator of a “-“), the number immediately following the “-“ indicates the frequency of the book/report. This frequency indicator is followed by a unique sequential accession number. For all other product classes the unique number is a sequential accession number without a frequency indicator. The frequency indicator for books/reports is as follows:

0 - Daily/Weekly/Monthly/Seasonal/Quarterly/Semi-Annual

1 - Census

2 - Annual

3 - Census

4 - Biennial

5 - Occasional
