Bonjour!

Our current focus in social studies is Heritage and Citizenship: Traditions and Celebrations.

In Grade 2 social studies, students will develop their understanding of their local community and begin to examine the global community. Students will explore a variety of traditions within their families and their local communities, developing and understanding of how these traditions contribute to and enrich their own community and Canadian society.

Ontario Curriculum; Social Studies, 2013

The overall expectations:

By the end of Grade 2, students will:

• demonstrate an understanding that Canada is a country of many cultures;

• use a variety of resources and tools to gather, process, and communicate information about similarities and differences among family traditions and celebrations;

• explain how the various cultures of individuals and groups contribute to the local community.

What does this unit look like?

There are so many different celebrations around the world and it is important for students to have a diverse awareness of them. To help organize the unit we have grouped celebrations into the following categories; harvest festivals, light festivals, new year/ new moon celebration, carnival celebrations and spring festivals. We will introduce a few celebrations for each of the above mentioned categories, but will go into depth with only two. The students will be asked to focus on the following information when studying a celebration; when, why, how, clothing, food and something interesting.

What activities could you do at home to support your child?

✓ Read books about celebrations. Use this opportunity to discuss similarities and differences between what they celebrate and/or other celebrations they have learned about.

✓ Participate in any community events that will allow your child to take part in different cultural experiences.

✓ Talk about traditions in your family with your child.

✓ Research images and information online about various celebrations around the world.

✓ Read the newspaper with your child and try to find stories about different cultural celebrations and events that take place.

Have fun with social studies!
