Sikh Practices, Rituals, Festivals and Milestones

Sikh Practices, Rituals, Festivals and Milestones

1. The gurdwara (“the door of the Guru” or “God’s home”) is the building Sikhs gather to worship. Create an information sheet (with both text and visual aids) describing the gurdwara and the practices and rituals that take place there. In your description include the following important terms: Guru Granth Sahib, granthi, diwan, takhat, Khanda, kirtan, ragis, karah parshad, langar.

2. What similarities (and differences) are there in Sikh practices and rituals and other monotheistic religions? Create a table/chart highlighting the important similarities and differences.

3. Outline and describe at least five religious customs/codes of behaviour that Sikhs follow in their daily lives. Which of these customs or codes would be the most challenging to honour for Canadian Sikhs? Explain.

4. Sikh festivals and religious celebrations can be divided into two broad categories. What are these two categories and how are the different?

5. Create a chart or table describing and explaining the significance of the festivals Sikhs celebrate each year. Make a second chart or table of all the ones celebrated in Canada. Compare and contrast the two. What can we learn from a comparison of the two?

6. Complete the following table:
