Job Description

Background

Founded in 1990, Western Canada Society to Access Justice (also known as ‘Access Justice’) was established by senior litigation lawyers to improve access by low-income people to the Canadian justice system. Access Justice is a non-profit registered charity with a volunteer board of directors that is dedicated to providing first-class pro bono legal assistance to low-income people throughout British Columbia. Those who cannot afford a lawyer and do not qualify for Legal Aid can receive free legal advice from a fully qualified lawyer on a range of criminal, family, immigration, and civil issues. The coordination provided by Access Justice ensures that the lawyer's time is used efficiently with high professional standards. There are presently 400 hundred lawyers donating 2 hours per week serving our 60 clinics which are based in communities that are easily accessible to clients. Our partner agencies publicize and host the service so that those requiring legal assistance receive it.

In July 2006, Access Justice’s Executive Director, Dugald Christie, died in an accident while crossing Canada to promote judicial reform. Access Justice is now recruiting an experienced Executive Director to lead the organization beyond the current transition period and enable Access Justice to meet the evolving needs of its stakeholders.

Responsibilities include Strategic leadership and management to support Access Justice’s mission, strategic objectives and programs by

• Developing and implementing funding and fundraising strategies

• Creating marketing and communication strategies for the public, legal community, and volunteers

• Monitoring quality outcomes and developing new program strategies

• Providing leadership and mentoring for 5 program/office staff and working with a large dedicated team of volunteers

• Developing and implementing a volunteer recruitment strategy

• Networking with legal community, social agencies and donors

• Maintaining confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information

• Managing all administration of the organization including financial controls and reporting, budgeting, annual audit, annual report

• Reporting to the Board of Directors

• Overall management of our 60 clinics

Qualifications sought:

• Demonstrated leadership, management, planning, strategic thinking, and budget management capabilities (5+ years)

• Experience with providing community-based services an asset

• Proven ability and experience writing successful funding proposals and other fundraising initiatives

• Excellent interpersonal and administrative skills with a creative approach to problem solving

• Advanced public speaking as well as written and oral communication skills

• Knowledge of issues around barriers to access to legal services and challenges of working with community organizations

• Minimum of Bachelor of Laws degree

• Familiarity with and contacts within the legal community desirable

Compensation is commensurate with individuals working in the non profit sector.
