To be accepted into Canada, an immigrant needs at least 67 points. Read the following case studies and the point system table to determine if the people involved will be permitted to enter Canada.

A. François Thibault is 30 years old. He is a doctor and comes from France. François has submitted an application to be transferred to Canada. François wants to come to Canada because his brother lives here and he is his only living family member. François can certainly speak French but he can also speak English very well. He has been a doctor for 3 years and has already received a job offer in Canada. He is single and is, therefore, available to work long hours.

B. Roberto Francini is a Haitian man who has applied for Canadian citizenship for himself and his wife, Marie. Roberto and Marie’s mother tongue is French, but they can speak a little English. Roberto is 20 years old. He has a high school diploma and has begun his third year working as a carpenter. Marie is 22 years old. She is unemployed but has begun her 4th year of studies to become a nurse. The couple does not have children but they would like to start a family. Roberto’s brother and his wife have a baby and they live in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Neither Roberto nor Marie has arranged work in Canada, but Roberto would take any job until something in his area of expertise is available. Marie wants to finish her studies.

How many points will Roberto receive? Will he be accepted? And Marie?

For your Chapter 4 project you are going to write a persuasive letter to the Canadian government to convince them that this couple should be accepted.

Use the information on Pages 70-71 in your textbook regarding “Immigration” and “Writing a Persuasive Letter” to help you organize your letter. Don’t forget (a) to use the format for a letter, (b) to include at least 3 reasons why you think this couple should be accepted and (c) to clearly state why you are writing to the government.
