Documents required in support of an application for the recognition of citizenship by birth

As of July 8, 2014 (see Law n. 89 dated 23/06/2014), applications presented by individuals 18 years and older are subject to a fee of Euro 300. The fee, due in Canadian dollars, is payable in cash or money order made out to the Consulate General of Italy – Vancouver. The fee must be paid in full, at the time of application, and is non-refundable (for current amount see Consular Table, art. 7b).

Applications are accepted from residents of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and the Yukon.

Please be informed that the Consulate General in Vancouver will only accept application for recognition of citizenship by mail.

Applications submitted in person will not be accepted.

We advise verifying that all required documents issued outside of our consular jurisdiction have been duly legalized and translated by the competent authorities.

The documentation must be in original and, where necessary, duly translated into Italian.

Vital statistics documents must be in long form (ie. Registration Photocopy format, and not Certificates) issued by the competent Provincial Vital Statistics office.

All personal information contained therein must correspond, and records containing errors or incongruences, specifically in relation to Italian born individuals, must be amended by the competent foreign Vital Statistics office. (*)

The registration of a vital statistics document in the registries of an Italian Town Hall is personal and can only be requested by the interested party. For a list of Town Halls in Italy visit uni.it.

The applicant 18 years and older must present:

- The application for recognition of Italian citizenship by birth, duly completed, dated and signed

- A photocopy of a valid current picture ID

- Payment of application fee of Euro 300,00 (in Canadian dollars), in cash or money order made out to Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver. For current fees in CAD, please visit the Table of Consular Fees in the "Forms" page of our website (consvancouver.esteri.it ).

- The following documentation in original duly translated in Italian:

1) Of the Italian ancestor (parent, grandparent, great-grandparent born in Italy):

- “Estratto dell’atto di nascita” issued by the competent Italian Town Hall. If the ancestor was born prior to the creation of the Italian vital statistics it may be possible to obtain a baptismal certificate from the competent Parish. In such cases, the latter must be legalized by the office of the Curia competent for the area, and subsequently legalized by the competent Prefettura;

- Long form of the marriage certificate and, where applicable, divorce documents;

- Long form of the death certificate, where applicable;

- Proof of non- naturalization/acquisition of a foreign citizenship from all the countries of residence of the ancestor, following their emigration from Italy.

If the ancestor did not acquire Canadian citizenship: a Permanent Resident Card (in certified copy if the application is mailed) or a Search of Citizenship Records. Visit the link cic.gc.ca/english/applications/index.html.

If the ancestor acquired Canadian citizenship: the certificate in large size – wallet sized certificates are not accepted. If the original in large size is no longer available, a Search of Citizenship Records issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada is required, indicating the exact date of naturalization. For women, the Search must be requested with both maiden and married names. For naturalizations prior to January 1, 1947, contact the Library and Archives Canada.

- Any Italian documents (e.g. passport) attesting the date(s) of emigration.

2) Of all forefathers:

- Long form of the certificate of birth

- Long form of the certificate of marriage and, where applicable, divorce documents (with a photocopy of the certificate of birth of the foreign spouse)

- Long form of the death certificate, where applicable

3) Of the applicant:

- All vital statistics documents in long form (birth, marriage, divorce, birth of all minor children)

- AIRE registration form duly completed, dated and signed.

(*) At the time of recognition of Italian citizenship, applicants with a double last name can, in accordance with Italian legislation, request to have only their paternal last name recognised.
