The William Patten Newsletter for Parents and Children

Issue 122

Friday 8th December 2017

Dear parents,

Our dance workshops have started and are going so well. They are joyful to watch and I can't wait to see the whole school performance. The auditions for the Cinderellas and the Angels (four of each) took place and over 100 children auditioned, which was fabulous to watch. I was very proud that so many children put themselves forward. Paul and Daisy had a very difficult job deciding who to select and I am glad they had to make the decision and not me! Congratulations to Amina Khan, Ivy Oakland, Kezia Davis and Basanti Utber who will play the role of Cinderella. Congratulations also to Charlie Brunson, Pablo Chalcraft, Lenny Jones and Zachary Alves who will play the role of the Angel. Details about the event will be sent out to families early next week. The Winter Fair was yet again a huge success and it has raised a record breaking amount of money (approximately ?5800). That is phenomenal and a huge thank you to everyone who came and of course our fabulous PTFA who organised the event. There is still time to donate for our Winter Warmer appeal. We are collecting food for the Hackney Food Bank and the Spitalfields Crypt Trust. The boxes are in the office and are overflowing already. Our super KS2 choir sang in the freezing cold (twice!) today outside Whole Foods. Old favourites such as `Jingle Bells' and `The Five Days of Christmas' went down very well, as did `Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree'. The children entertained people passing by and the staff, who said all the customers were coming in with smiles on their faces because of the beautiful singing! The KS2 choir raised over ?150 - well done indeed! We will use the money to fill up the food boxes even more. Have a lovely weekend and wrap up warm!

Best wishes Karen

On the weekend of the 18th and 19th of November Zahra (6J) and Zaynab (3C) attended a two day coding hackathon at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, run by a fantastic organisation called Stemettes. They are an award winning social enterprise working across the UK and Ireland to inspire and support young women into Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths careers (collectively known as STEM). The weekend was centred on coding in different programing languages including Scratch, Python and Watson. The workshop named `How Machines Work' involved the girls selecting a programming language they were interested in and creating a project to demonstrate and explain how machines/robots work and have changed our lives. Zahra and Zaynab chose to code using Scratch, and learnt some new skills to produce a 3 minute presentation, which they gave to a packed room of over 100 people earning them first prize! A very big congratulations to them!

Bauble workshop The children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 had lots of fun painting and decorating baubles in a workshop run by artist, Laura. The children first painted the base of their bauble in special metallic coloured paints, before using a range of tools and techniques to add finer details. They created lovely winter scenes and were thrilled that they would be able to take them home, either to add to their Christmas tree or as a keepsake to decorate their home with during winter!

Visit to Olive School ? 3FF Link Day 1N visited the Olive School as part of an ongoing project with the 3 Faiths Forum. As this was our first linking session, we played lots of games to get to know each other and were very excited when we made new friends. Both classes worked on collaborative tasks throughout the day, with a focus on sharing ideas of how everyone should treat each other. All of the children worked so well together ? we were very impressed with how sensible and mature they were. The children had a great time spending the day in a different school and are very excited about our next link day!

Parasol Unit Gallery This week 5D visited the Parasol Unit Gallery in Islington to look at the work of Martin Puryear. The children studied his sculptures and discussed their interpretation of each piece with an artist who works there. Afterwards 5D were lucky enough to design and make their own sculptures inspired by Martin's work, in a workshop room within the gallery. A super Monday morning!

EYFS Superhero Assembly On 27th November, Nursery and Reception children came to school dressed up as their favourite superhero and participated in a special assembly where they showed their costume to their friends and discussed the superpowers that they had. Throughout this half-term, we have looked at the topic of `Fantasy and Adventure' and we have read many books with very unusual superheroes such as the Paper Bag Princess, Super Daisy and Captain Flinn; our assembly was a chance to celebrate this work. Such a super event!

Forest School Maths Day William Patten School was once again invited to take part in the Forest School Maths Day. Basanti, Yaseen and Zahra, from Year 6, spent an afternoon investigating and solving mathematical problems in a Key Stage 3 setting. The children were well supported by Forest School students and received a certificate in recognition of their efforts. Well done to all three for representing the school so well and also for working with older students and those from primaries across London at this special event.

Buzz Road Workshop Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children had the opportunity to take part in a Buzz Road Safety workshop. They learnt how to stay safe when crossing a road; by crossing in a safe designated place and also listening, looking, walking and holding an adult's hand. Several children modelled these rules during the workshop and they also identified a zebra crossing, learnt how to use a traffic island and found out the meaning of the traffic light colours for a pedestrian as well as a driver. Throughout the workshop, children listened brilliantly and they contributed to the discussion by asking and answering interesting questions.

National Maths Competition Amy, Ethan, Lola and Mika (Y6) took part in round 2 of the National Young Mathematicians' Awards at the Explore Learning Centre on Essex Road following successful completion of round 1. The team worked collaboratively to solve a neverseen-before mathematical problem which had even more complexity than the problem successfully solved in round 1! A huge well done to the team for having successfully progressed to round 2 and also for their confident approach and team ethos which really shone through. It was great to see such enthusiasm in their collaborative approach to problem-solving.

All Food All Equal! 5M's campaign to create awareness about the effects of food waste has been a tremendous success. Over the last 5 weeks, the children have worked with Groundwork, an environmental charity. They have learned about the harmful effects that sending food to landfill has on the environment; how to make smoothies from `wonky' fruit and vegetables that supermarkets might not want to sell and monitored the amount of food wasted after lunch by Years 4, 5 and 6. Their very successful awareness campaign has led to a reduction in the amount of edible food being thrown away! They also hosted a tea party for 5D where they served cake left over from the Winter Fair and presented their learning to their peers. Finally, the children took their campaign to the Winter Fair where visitors could taste their delicious food made from leftovers. Thank you to those who have submitted their recipe ideas for a cookbook ? please send in any leftover recipe ideas either to the office or email admin@williampatten.hackney.sch.uk by Monday, 18th December. We're all good for banana cake!

PTFA Update The numbers are in, and we are proud to announce that we made a whopping ?5,800 at the Winter Fair last weekend! This has broken the record for money made at a William Patten Winter Fair. On top of this Lisa Buckingham made ?1,500 at the inaugural William Patten Quiz night and Auction and Hannah Worthington raised ?900 through asking parents to display a Location Location Board outside their house. Huge thanks to all the parents and carers who generously donated time, expertise, food and prizes; the office for acting as our central communications hub, David for opening up the school on Saturday, Karen and Sian for being the dynamic duo on the door and at the raffle, and of course thanks to everyone who came to the fair and made it such a lovely event. A very special shout out goes to the team of fair coordinators Paget and team for the magical Candyland Grotto, Darcy for the arts and crafts, Olga and Allie for the fantastic spread of food, Fatema for her legendary curries, Claudia and Katrina for the jumble, Greg for the mulled cider and hot chocolate, Angela for stepping in at the last minute and rustling up a staggering array of raffle prizes, and last but by no means least Jasmine, who took on the overall coordination of the fair and singlehandedly pulled it together when no one else would - the fair just would not have happened this year without her, and what a fair it was! Initiatives funded by the PTFA include iPADs, the Roof Garden, the mural, the Dancer in Residence and Sadlers Wells show, outdoor classroom spaces for Early Years, lunchtime playworkers, the environmental awareness competition and of course the green screen. In this current climate as budgets are cut and schools are being squeezed financially it is fantastic to see how engaged and involved William Patten parents are and how committed we are to supporting the school. Let's keep up the good work and let us know your ideas for how to spend some of the money we have raised, to enrich the lives of every child in the school. Our next meeting will be in February we'd like to see as many people as possible there. You can get in touch via email: williampattenptfa@ facebook: ampattenptfa/ , via the office or grabbing one of us in the playground.

The School Council discusses issues raised by children in their class. If you have any ideas or suggestions, don't forget to tell your class representative. Our school councillors this year are: Siri and Sonny (2T), Eliza and Jonah (2K), Malaika and Henry (3A), Ailish and Sonny (3C), Keira and Malik (4H), Zarya and Dexter (4M), Elsie and Kit (5D), Nell and Joshua I (5M), Connie and Daniel (6B), Bella and Abubakr (6J).

These are the points raised by the children at the recent school council meeting and the SMT responses to them:

School dinners - jelly Children would like jelly, as we used to have it a long time ago. The jelly would need to be vegetarian and that can be more expensive. We are looking to find a supplier. At the moment we have just introduced waffles again, so in the future we might be able to do waffles one week and jelly the next ( if we can find the right jelly!).

Signs for KS2 to KS1 playground The School Council have made signs to go up by the small playground reminding the KS2 classes what day they can go in at morning playtime.

Behaviour in clubs Karen and Sian met with the managers at Clubs Complete to talk about behaviour at clubs. They are going to speak to all the club leaders again and we have also asked if someone from clubs can be here to supervise clubs to ensure everyone is doing the right thing.

School gate School Council reported that some children are opening the gate. We have spoken to the adults on duty to make sure that no child opens the gate ? even if they know the person who is there.

Skipping ropes The children would like skipping ropes in the playground. We have already put skipping ropes outside, but somehow they have been lost. We will order some more for the Spring term.

Peer supporters- Y6 asking for younger children At lunchtime, some Year 6 children are asking the Peer Supporters to go and get some of the younger children to play with. This interrupts the EYFS and KS1 children, who are playing with their friends. It also interrupts the Peer Supporters from doing their work. Karen will ask Ben and Jon to speak to their classes.

Odd sock day The children would like to wear odd socks to raise money for charity. Karen has asked the school council to look at charities to support. As a school we support

the Hackney Foodbank in September and December

the Spitalfields Crypt Trust at Christmas Comic Relief Sport Relief

FFS- repeat the rules everyday Karen will speak to Sammy about this, but FFS run the Playcentre provision.

FFS ? better snacks Karen will speak to Sammy about this, but FFS run the Playcentre provision.

Rucksacks ? too big Children are bringing huge bags to school, which they do not need to. Children only need their bookbag and packed lunch. Some children might need kit for clubs after school. Most of the rucksacks only contain a packed lunch, so Karen will be asking children to bring smaller bags after the Christmas holiday. The big bags make the packed lunch boxes very heavy.

Charity fundraising See above. The School Council will look at the charities we support and decide whether to add any more or not. We need to plan which charities to support over a year, rather than deciding on the spur of the moment to do something.

Calm corner School Council presented in assembly and relaunched the Calm Corner in the KS2 playground. The expectations about making sure it is a quiet space with no running through were shared with all KS2 classes.
