I. MANDATORY EDUCATION (PHARMACY, NURSING, AND MEDICAL SCHOOLS) A. Purpose: The endocannabinoid system and its manipulation by phytocannabinoids requires proper education in pharmacy, nursing, and medical schools. B. Why: Millions of Americans are using cannabis as complementary or alternative therapies for chronic conditions. As of 2018, 9 states and the District of Columbia have provisions for the regulated use of cannabis in adults. This increase in accessibility may also lead to potential medication interactions and subsequent preventable harm. As public servants readily accessible to patients, pharmacists have a responsibility to consider the welfare of humanity and relieve suffering. Medical professionals need to be aware of the potential benefit and harm that may result from cannabis use. C. Resolution: Pharmacy and Medical schools should work individually and cooperatively to ensure the unbiased education of our future healthcare professionals. ASCPh supports curriculum that: 1. Reviews the basic functions of the endocannabinoid system 2. Explains the uses and possible harms of phytocannabinoids, including the high potential for misuse and abuse 3. Differentiates between various formulations in pharmacokinetic terms (Absorption ? Distribution- Metabolism- Excretion)
