Cherokee County School District E-Pilot Program

We are excited to announce that Cherokee County School District has been selected by the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee as part of the E-learning pilot program that began in 2018. This program allows students to work remotely when the school district is closed for inclement weather situations, eliminating the need for make up days later in the semester.

What is an E-learning Day?

In most cases, Cherokee County School District will use E-learning days for inclement weather days. On E-Learning Days, students and teachers do not report to school but will complete classroom activities using technology (Grades 212). We can use up to three (3) E-Learning Days and will decide if we use consecutive days on a case-by-case basis. In this brochure you will find answers to some of the frequently asked questions about E-Learning Days.

How and when will students and parents know if an E-Learning Day will take place?

We will communicate school building cancellations and the announcement of an ELearning Day through phone calls, district/school websites, social media, and local media. It is important to note that school is not cancelled, just the location is changing.

How will students be informed about assignments?

In grades 2-12, teachers will post their assignments on Canvas. When possible, students will download their assignments to their district devices ahead of time at school. This will happen when conditions are favorable for a possible school building closure.

How much schoolwork will students be required to accomplish?

We will not overload our students with busy work but will instead provide meaningful learning activities related to their current units of study. Assignments should take a reasonable amount of time to complete when on task. We certainly understand that students will want to have time to enjoy the snow and we will not require 7 1/2 hours of work during an E-learning day.

When will assignments be due?

As students complete their work, they should upload their assignments. If an Internet connection is not available, they will have up to two school days after the last school cancellation to turn in assigned work.

How will attendance and grading be handled?

All students will initially be counted as present on the E-learning Day. However, if the assigned work is not completed and submitted within the 2-day grace period, the student must be coded as absent on the day the school building was closed. Since their assignments are just like any others, failure to do their work will be graded in accordance with the teacher's grading policy.

Will my student have an opportunity to learn more about how an E-Learning Day works?

Yes, each school will hold a mock E-learning event where teachers will teach students how to retrieve and complete their digital lessons just like they will do on a real E-Learning Day.

What about my student in Pre-K through 1st grade?

Students in these grades do not use Canvas. When an E-learning Day seems or is likely, activities will be sent home in an E-learning folder. If the school building closure is unexpected, teachers will post assignments online via SeeSaw.

What if my student has difficulty on an assignment?

Each teacher will be required to have "office hours" during the school day, and during those specified office hours the teachers will respond to Canvas messages as well as emails to assist students in completing assignments.
