Guidelines for Interactive Math Notebooks

Guidelines for Interactive Math Notebooks

Ms. Campos, 8th Grade Math

The purpose of the interactive notebook is to enable you to be a creative, independent thinker and problem solver. Interactive notebooks will be used for class notes, homework assignments, and other activities which ask you to express your own ideas or process information that is presented in class.

1. What is the cover page?

The first notebook assignment will be a cover page. This activity allows you to create an entire page about you. Think if the cover page as a blank canvas that you can fill in with whatever interests your or describes who you are (pictures, drawings or words). Be sure to create a page that is appropriate for a school setting! Be sure to include your name on the cover page.

2. How should my notebook be organized?

Your notebook will be organized into units through unit pages (that you will create). Assignments will be titled and the pages will be numbered to help keep you organized.

a. What is a module page?

Every topic that we will be studying this year will have a module page. Module pages are marked with a tab to indicate the beginning of a module. This page will help to keep you organized.

b. What happens if I am absent?

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to complete the assignments that you missed. There will be a class notebook that you can reference, to help you get caught up or you can ask a classmate. If you have any questions regarding the missed work, please ask. You are always welcome to stay after school to get help with and complete missing assignments.

3. How will my notebook be graded?

You will be responsible for all pages that are assigned in your interactive notebook, most of which will count as either a class work or homework grade. You will always be told if a specific assignment will be graded.

4. How do I keep up with my interactive notebook?

It is your responsibility to stay organized with your interactive notebook. If you ever fall behind, lose your notebook (or some of the content within it) or are just confused, please stay after school for extra help. Remember, we will be working on the notebook together in class so if you pay attention, ask questions, and complete the daily assignments, you should be all set. If you lose your notebook, you are responsible for buying a new one. You will be given one at the beginning of the year, and you are responsible for it for the entire year.

5. What are parents expected to do?

Parents are asked to take time and review the student’s notebook, once every two weeks. The student will “teach” the parent a concept covered in class. Parents are expected to write a sentence or two about what was learned. Without writing what was learned, the student will not receive full credit. Once, every two weeks, that’s all I ask.

Please share this handout with your parent or guardian. Once you have read it please sign below to show that you understand the notebook guidelines and expectations. Please also have your parent/guardian sign the guidelines to ensure that they are aware of your responsibility. This will count as part of your first homework assignment.
