Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS)

CAPA develops Technical Bulletin “Best Practices for the use of Recycled Asphalt Shingles” (See here)

CDOT Develops Recycled Asphalt Shingles Specification Add Colorado to the list of state DOT’s with a specification for recycled asphalt shingles (RAS).  The specification was developed jointly with CAPA and includes limits on deleterious material, quality control requirements, and restrictions on use.  The first project will be this summer on US 36, south of Boulder in CDOT Region 4.

Quality Requirements for Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) – To address concerns on quality control, guidelines for “RAS Best Practices” are being developed for the use of recycled asphalt shingles (RAS). The Nebraska DOT RAS specification addresses maximum amount of RAS, not allowing any deleterious material, sizing of material, and a certification of product. CAPA continues to partner with the Roofs to Roads project in Colorado.

Detecting Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) in Hot Mix Asphalt:  Questions have been raised on how an owner/agency can test to determine the presence of recycled asphalt shingles in HMA.  The simplest thing to do is A) conduct an AC Content Determination Test using an ignition oven test and look for fibers (should be able to see the fiberglass ones) or B) do a solvent based extraction test and look for fibers (fiberglass and organic ones).  Either of these approaches should give a yes or no indication of the presence of shingles. An estimated range of shingle content used can be estimated based on the fiber content.
