These hubs form part of the Biodiversity Capabilities Directorate and are integrated into the Conservation Operations of the relevant landscapes. Successful applicants will report to Landscape Conservation Intelligence Managers. PURPOSE OF THE JOB:To provide a professional scientific support service (to all relevant stakeholders), in such a manner as to promote biodiversity resilience, inform land use and development planning, environmental assessments and authorisations, natural resource management and other multi-sectoral planning processes. This is achieved by ensuring CapeNature delivers on its mandate to conserve the unique natural heritage resources of the Western Cape for the benefit of all.CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:Provide scientific input and advice into regional and local land-use planning and decision-making by investigating the potential impact of present and potential future land uses, and advise decision-making authorities accordingly from a biodiversity perspective.Maintain and update existing Land Use Advice database. Engage with relevant policy, forward planning and legislative development processes at local, regional and national level. Provide scientific support and advice to corporate and other clients, through formulation of proposals and recommendations as required through regulatory requirements (when required).Identify applications proactively or reactively that could contribute towards expanding the conservation estate. Identify applications proactively or reactively and engage specialists internally where offset mechanisms are sought.Actively report illegal land use activities that threaten biodiversity to the relevant authorities, assist authorities with queries related to site sensitivity. Develop or contribute to the development of biodiversity legislative tools such as BMP-s, BMP-e, spatial biodiversity plans, AIS management plans, biodiversity and other legislation, regulation, policies, N&S, SOPs and SOGs.Stay updated with best available science in the Land Use Advice sector. Contribute to own scientific development by doing research and/or literature studies to improve scientific expertise.Where required, provide training and support to colleagues regarding environmental legislation and guidelines.Represent the employer in a scientific capacity at meetings, workshops and conferences, at a local, regional and national level.Promote or contribute to the promotion of public awareness about healthy natural ecosystems, habitats, landscapes, and ecosystem services through engagements at conservation, environmental and planning forums and meetings that are relevant to biodiversity and land use. REQUIREMENTS:A Natural Science degree (B.Sc., B.Sc. Agric., B.Sc. Honours, N.H.Dip./B.Tech.) which meets the requirements for SACNASP registration as a Professional Scientist in the appropriate field of practice (Conservation Science, Ecological Science, Biological Science or Zoological Science).At least five years post qualification experience working in a conservation-related field.Detailed knowledge of applicable current environmental and land use legislation such as the National Environmental Management Act; National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act; National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act; National Water Act; Mining and Petroleum Resources Development Act.Detailed knowledge of and demonstrated experience in working with environmental and land use planning policies, frameworks and guidelines.Excellent communication, inter-personal and writing skills. A good understanding of the principles of systematic conservation planning and knowledge of systematic conservation plans applicable to the Western Cape Province.A good understanding of the Protected Area Expansion Strategies.A good understanding of terrestrial, freshwater and coastal ecosystems in the Western Cape.A good understanding of biodiversity offset mechanisms and applicable legislation.A good working knowledge of the MS Office suite and a full-featured GIS Package (e.g. QGIS, ArcView and Google Earth Pro.)
