Come along on a journey to explore the North America!

Your journey will take you across the United States of America. Along the way, you will climb high atop mountains, descend deep into canyons, cross flat plains, and navigate bodies of water, both large and small. You will also learn about our northern neighbor, Canada. Then you will head south through Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Happy trails!

Directions:

1. Throughout this packet, you will find maps and questions. All the information you need to answer the questions is found on the maps in this packet. You do not need to look at maps or books outside of this packet to find the answers. You will need a pencil and colored pencils or crayons to complete this packet. You may work with a friend, sibling, parent, or guardian.

2. Remember that on the maps, capital cities are marked with stars. Vocabulary words in italics can be found at the end of the packet, in the Words to Know section.

3. All important dates are included in the packet letter. Put your completed packet in the GeoBowl Box in the Front Lobby. The packet will be returned to you with any corrections marked as needed. You will also receive a certificate recognizing your interest and effort.

4. All students who complete the packet and show an effort to study for the GeoBowl quiz are eligible to participate on a GeoBowl team (see packet letter for more details.) Teams may be made up of students from different classes.

5. The grade-level GeoBowl teams will compete against each other in bowls at assemblies April 26th.

The United States of America

The United States of America (USA) is located on the continent of North America, bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The USA is made up of fifty (50) states. Two (2) of the states are not connected by land to the other 48 states. Alaska lies on the northwestern border of Canada, and Hawaii is a group of small islands in the Pacific Ocean. The total population of the United States is approximately 308,747,538 people (taken from the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau Count). Every 10 years, a count of everyone living in the United States takes place. This count is called a census, and the next one will happen in 2020. The original colonies were in the east of the USA. As the country grew, settlers moved from east to west across the continent. This packet also starts in the east and moves west.
