AP Studio Art:

2-D Design Portfolio

Syllabus

GOAL: To complete a portfolio of twenty-four pieces of art.

Portfolios are made up of at least 24 art pieces, 12 that show artist's breadth of experience and 12 that show a concentration in one themes. This is about 1 piece per week.

Course Description

The AP Studio Art course is designed for students who are seriously interested in art. In this course students will continue to build skills and develop mastery through exploration of concepts and original ideas expressed in compositions. The 2-D portfolio contains three sections: Quality, Concentration, and Breadth.

The Quality section consists of 5 examples of your best work. The actual works must be submitted. The 5 works may come from the Concentration and/or your breadth sections but they do not have to.

The Concentration section is a planned investigation of an idea or particular design concern. This section of the portfolio should include 12 different works. These works may not be taken from the Breadth section of the portfolio. A written commentary must be included that describes what your concentration is about and how it evolved over the course of your investigation. The response should be concise with no additional sheets attached or they will not be read. The commentary should answer the questions: What is the central idea of your concentration? and How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific slides a s examples.

The Breadth section shows your understanding of the principles of design and demonstrates your abilities and versatility with techniques, problem solving and ideas. This section of the portfolio consists of 12 different works. This section may not include work from the concentration portion.

ATTENDANCE

Obviously creation of this many pieces will require a great deal of time and effort. I will be strictly enforcing the tardy and attendance rules of the school and expect you to follow them. The only way to make up for absences or numerous tardies is to come before or after school and make up the time.

Supplies

This is a list of supplies that you should try to accumulate over the summer. Art supplies are expensive and, often, the more expensive the higher the quality. When you start using higher quality it’ll be hard to go back to the cheap stuff. Why? They make what you’re trying to do easier, you’ll see. The prices I’m listing are approximations; you may find they are more or less than the price listed.

Here’s what you’ll DEFINEATELY need:

Ask a sales associate to help you out, tell them what you prefer;

Watercolor, acrylic, oil pastel and then tell them you’re on a budget.

AP STUDIO ART - SUMMER HOMEWORK

You are required to complete five of the following assignments over the summer. These works will count as 50% of your 1st Quarter grade. You may use whatever media you like, materials are available in room 304 for summer loan. No piece may be smaller than 12 x 16. You will also begin keeping a sketchbook of ideas. You can choose any five assignments from the list below:

❑ A self-portrait that expresses a specific mood. Think about the effects of color and how its use can help to convey the individual mood. You might want to do several studies that reflect different moods.

❑ Do a pencil and graphite stick drawing of a still-life arrangement that consists of reflective objects (at least 2 items.) Think of metallic and glass pieces.

❑ Do a drawing of an unusual interior...looking inside a purse, a junk-drawer, glove box of a car.

❑ Do a still-life drawing consisting of your worldly treasures.

❑ Do a portrait that combines the use of three different poses.

❑ Draw a recurring nightmare that you have...or just one nightmare you had that really scared you.

❑ Paint a cityscape or a landscape from life. Do not use a photograph.

❑ Create a drawing of something characteristically "Cicero." Your interpretation, be creative.

If you have any questions about any of these assignments you may send me an email at lisadure@

Or give me a call at 773-562-7857.

HOMEWORK

This is a college level course and it is expected that students will spend a considerable amount of time outside the classroom working on completion of assignments. Ideas for projects or solutions to problems should be worked out in a sketchbook both in class and outside of class. The sketchbook is an important tool in recording ideas, visual information, compositional issues, doodling around in and various assignments.

Homework: Week 1

Complete the following drawing assignments and be ready to present them to the class next week when we return: you may draw them on white typing paper, lined notebook paper, a classified page from the newspaper of in a fancy sketchbook.

❑ One still life of at least three items.

❑ One drawing of something you see sitting outside (be sitting outside looking at the thing when you are drawing it.)

Weekly Homework:

Every week you are to complete one drawing at home, these drawings should take you at least 60minutes to complete. Homework is due each Tuesday of every week. Choose from the drawing descriptions below to complete each of theses assignments:

❑ Portrait of a friend-in color

❑ Seated human figure, heat to toe

❑ Reclining human figure

❑ Distorted self-portrait

❑ Double figure portrait

❑ Hands holding a variety of objects

❑ Architectural structure, whole or detail

❑ Outdoor vegetation

❑ Negative space of a houseplant

❑ Imaginary landscape

❑ Still life of kitchen items

❑ Still life of bathroom items on a bathroom surface

❑ Still life of clear glass and or shiny objects

❑ Still life of stacked folded laundry

❑ Still life arrangement of repeated objects

❑ Zoom in cropped portrait

❑ Line drawing of a cluttered area

❑ Detailed drawing of an insect

❑ Interior, closet, junk-drawer, book bag, locker

❑ Angels and Demons (your interpretation)

❑ Interpret a poem or song

❑ Illustrate your favorite saying

❑ Illustrate a dream you had

❑ Create a book cover for a book you read

❑ Political cartoon

❑ 100 ellipses followed by 5 elliptical studies.

On occasion drawing homework will be substituted with reading/written work.

WRITTEN WORK

Students will study, read and write about a variety of different artists, art movements and art forms regularly as part of the class.

MAJOR WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS:

First Semester students will work in groups of three to create a 5 page typed research paper about a 2oth Century artist movement of their choice. This project will be accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation and a verbal presentation to the class. This project counts as the Final Exam grade.

Second semester students will each be responsible for completing a 3 page typed research paper about the artist of their choice. This project will be accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation and a verbal presentation to the class. This project counts as the Final Exam grade.

Second semester student will also write an artist's statement to accompany their portfolio of work.

COPYRIGHT

Students are not allowed to work from published photographs or other copyrighted work. Work must be based upon original concepts and primarily from direct observation. Students may work from photographs that they themselves have composed or when working directly from observation is impossible. Students may use various source as resource or reference material but may not copy directly any other persons concept, intellectual invention, images as their own.

COURSE SCHEDULE

Semester One:

The first portion of the year will concentrate on the Breadth section of the portfolio with discussion of possible concentrations. Some of the pieces in the Breadth sections will be teacher driven but will maintain student individuality of expression and originality.

The following is a list of assignments given in the past during first semester:

Mini-Concentration- Create a series of pieces based on one household object. (hammer, extension cord, garlic press).

Combined Gesture- Combine a series of nine still life, pen & ink gestures into one piece. Assemble the pieces and add to them to create a unified drawing.

Giant Self-Portrait- Create a large format self portrait using color pastels.

Figure- Spend two weeks developing your figure drawing technique.

Cubist Still Life- complete a still life in oil pastel that is cubist in style.

Charcoal reduction still life

Unusual Viewpoint- Draw something common from an unusual viewpoint

The second portion of the year will consist mainly of working on the Concentration portion of the portfolio. Once you have identified your area of Concentration you can begin building this section of the portfolio.

The following chart will be used as a time line to manage your time and to monitor your progress. Key dates will be given. This chart will be filled out in class.
