The correct match for your silver wheels is the Wurth Silver Wheel Paint and a top coat of Wurth Clear Wheel Paint. If you can't find them locally, give me a shout.

Indischrot translates to "India Red" which is also known by the name of Guards Red, named after the red jackets (redcoats) that were worn by the British troops who occupied India.

The color is red with hints of orange and black... It is the classic red of Porsche cars, and the color of many 911 and 944 cars...

In the computer world, it looks closest to r=3D255, g=3D0, b=3D0...

Plastikote T29 [school bus yellow]. Clean well - maybe even sandblast - then prime [gray] before spraying. Plastikote does not go on thick like Rustoleum or Krylon... plan several coats.

I read a post lately but couldn`t find it in saved mail. Someone was looking for touch-up paint which dealer couldn`t get. I got some for my car at: CAR CORP. OF MADISON, 1850 S. STOUGHTON RD. MADISON, WI. 53716 PH 608 221-9099 Hrs--m/f 730-600, sat. 730-100. $7.00 for a 2oz bottle, or they can mix you any amount. Hope the guy sees this. Larry

If you know the paint code, you can try any VW/Audi dealer. Porsche has indeed stopped selling paint, but VW & Audi still sell it! For example my Zermatt-Silber Met is available as part# L 0Y7 Y in touch-up form.

I have discovered this because my local dealership is a joint Porsche/Audi venture.

Tim, before you move ahead with your paint job, you may want to consider a shop that I went to in LA. They did all of the final prep and paint work on my '83 944 including color change for $3500. That included a fair amount of bodywork and custom work as well. The quality is as good as any paint job I have ever seen and the owner is a true Porsche fan and knows what it takes to make the job right. Ask John Anderson about my car. He has seen it several times both at our social events and on the race track. If you are looking for a vented nose panel, you should buy a fiberglass panel from either AIR or GT-Racing. Don't cut up the stock panel!!! I can personally guarantee the shops quality and the owner will stand by his work. He has been in this location for almost ten years. You could drop the car off, take a plane back to San Diego for about $39.00 and when the car is ready, you can fly back up. Think about it. You will actually save money from your other estimates and know that you are getting a quality job. I would be happy to show you my car any time. If you're interested, talk to John or call me at 805-495-5353. Or you can call the shop. It's Dave's Autobody at 310-410-4065. Talk only to Dave. The manager Rick is a cool guy but he won't get involved as deeply as Dave will. You won't be sorry.

Plasti-Kote Hi-Temp Black Wrinkle. Get it from an automotive paint supply store. Directions are critical. Heat gun, pre-heat subject, multiple coats, post-heat evenly, etc.

Finish is durable and quite nice looking, not really wrinkled but slightly textured ... if we meet up at one of the Charlotte things I'll bring the '82 so you can see for yourself.

Has lasted for a year on cam box, won't hold up to header heat but then it isn't supposed to either.

If it is for aluminum, go to your local Harley dealer. Not the cheapest stuff in the world at $15/spray can, but it did a very good job when I was detailing my Evo motor on my bike, and held better that the Plasti-Kote that I tried first. I don't know that it will work better on other metals, tho, and suspect that it is optimized for aluminum applications.

I've gotten a quart of brush-on/roller-on Chip Guard from Phil's Automotive (thanks to a list member) and although I recall hearing good things about the product I wanted to see if anyone had any sort of BAD experience with the product before taking the final step.

It sounds like a great idea to me -- roller it on and peel it off (or powerwash). Phil says it will protect the paint from about anything short of something which will dent the body. It's listed under Services @ if you're interested.

Subject: Re: Splash guards 1/4/99L

From: "Claus Groth"

I am in the process of doing that. I stripped the rubberized coating and painted the red body color last week. This week I'll apply the stoneguard material.

Herewith are a few suggestions to make the job easier.

Of course, remove the rubber skirts from under the body.

The textured coating was applied over an excellent primer. Don't remove the primer. I used a three-inch wide wallpaper scraper that essentially utilizes a long razor blade. The blade was quite dull and did a good job except that considerable pressure was required to push it. So I installed a new blade thinking that I would then zip right through it. I found that it immediately cut into the primer and couldn't be pushed at all. Back to the dull blade and it worked well, not even nicking the primer.

Scrape the entire area except for one half inch at the top. Slowly scrape the remainder away and the edge will become a straight line. The body paint will not be scraped because the primer is thicker that the paint above it.

There are spot weld dimples fore and aft of the vertical crease that aligns with the back edge of the door. These cannot be seen through the textured coating but will be visible through the paint. I elected to sand using 320 grit and apply body filler to smooth the area around the welds. I also filled the crease, as it was easier to blend and smooth the area.

Primer was applied over the filler. I sanded all of the primer and applied color and clear coat. You can purchase a quart of clear coat, reducer and hardener or purchase a spray can of clear coat for two-stage paint, available at Pep Boys. Under the stoneguard, this is probably adequate.

BTW, here in southern California, one quart of DuPont two stage color (not even Glasruit or Sikkens) cost $65. Reducer, clear and hardener were extra.

Compound / Polish

Subject: Re: Polish compounds again, 6/29/98L

From: Jim Richmond, fireball fireball@

A while back, I was fortunate enough to correspond with fellow list member Mark Wollner. It turns out that Mark works in the 3M testing lab where they test not only 3M car care products but those of the competition also. He picks the top products to use on his own red 944. I asked Mark what would bring back the black paint on our S2 as it looked like crap. He indicated it was not a plug but that the 3M Perfect-it Foam Polishing Pad Glaze tested better than anything else. He said it was a bit pricey but well worth it. I located it at a local automotive paint supply house. A quart cost $20, not pricey by P car standards, and the foam buffer pad in the low 20s. I bought the product and my S2 partner agreed to do the polishing with his buffer. I tried it by hand first and it is hard to get the rag going 1800 rpm.

The glaze needs to be applied with a buffer, variable speed is better, 1800 rpm is best according to Mark, but the instructions indicated up to 2300 is ok. The best way to describe the finished car was "killer". The paint was awesome with no swirl marks. Even in the bright sun, you can hardly see the swirls. At the next a-x, people came up to comment on how great the car looked (a first). This was the true test when they had 100 other Porsches to look at.

My partner said he had the glaze all over him when he was done. It didn't do much to improve his appearance however. The container still feels almost full so I know he didn't use much.

My thanks to Mark, his professional advice was right on.

Subject: [racing] paint damage under magnetic numbers - repaired! 8/2/00

From: "Brad Maker" bradmaker@

Earlier this season I left my magnetic numbers on the car all weekend. Weather was cloudy with some rain. Peeling them off Sunday afternoon I was shocked to see the paint on my hood was blotched and cloudy. Several people responded to my original post, and water damage seemed to be the consensus. Common problem with bras too, many reported. Sunbathing, wax, and Imperial Hand Glaze didn't help at all.

I finally got more aggressive with the paint, and discovered that 3M "Scratch Remover - Premium Rubbing Compound" did the trick. It took a lot of elbow grease, but the hood looks good as new. The product claims to be clearcoat safe, which appears to hold in my case.

MESSAGE: (#5442) DO THIS TO YOUR PAINT! 12/10/00

AUTHOR: perry951 perry@

I ran a paint shop for a few years and can tell you that there are things you can do to restore the shine. Depending on the condition (oxidation, chips, scratches, etc.), you can get good results. My '87 951 had badly faded, but I got it to near perfect condition with a lot of hard work. I do not recommend going after it with a direct drive buffer because of its age. You will most likely go right through the paint. Orbitals do not provide enough pressure to remove the 1st layer of paint. Get some 3M Machine Glaze, and do it by hand. Do a little at a time, large swirling motions with a good cloth, and about 3 applications will do. Then, go over the entire car with hand glaze (also by 3M) and leave it be for about a week. Make sure that it rains (or spray water on it) at last once in that week. Then, on a nice day, clean it up, and put a nice coat of your favorite wax on it. Have a lot of elbow grease on tap, and Ben-gay around for that sore shoulder. It is well worth the 6 hours it can take.

I have been using the Eastwood 'Hot Coat' stuff for about a year. It works great. Very easy to produce a nice finished product. I have powder coated a bunch of intercooler pipes, a cam tower in black crinkle and various other bits and pieces. I had planned to power coat some phone dials but they were sold before I got a chance. Let me know if you would like a pic of the final results...

Subject: RE: Has anyone used the Eastwood CO Hotcoat product? 1/6/02

I have used it and it is a very good product (the regular not the really expensive unit). As with any paint producer the prep work is very important. THE almost chrome gives a very nice result and the black crinkle looks nice on the cam box....

The same thing can be accomplished with stuff you probably already have on hand:

Stretch a piece of cloth over a small wood block (a small piece of an old T-shirt works great).

Moisten the cloth with lacquer thinner and rub over the paint blob until it is flush with the surface.

I have won concours events with a guards red 944 using this method to repair stone chips.

Subject: Guards Red in a spray can? 7/28/02

From: "Bruce A. Carr" CarrBA@

Does any automotive touch-up paint company make Guards Red in a spray can?

Guards Red model car paint works, but it's pretty expensive in those little spray cans although it does match perfectly on my '88. Also, you have to put on about 600 scale-model-thickness coats to get one full-size-car thickness.

Subject: Re: Guards Red in a spray can? 7/28/02

From: "eBearing - Bruce A. Carr" CarrBA@

Yeah, it's the Testor's ModelMaster stuff ...

Prep involved cleaning the rockers with that nasty Castrol purple cleaner, scrub off the cone marks (!), then DuPont's silicone and wax remover / paint cleaner,

then water.

Carefully taped off everything above the pebbly part, below it, and to the sides for about 3 feet (didn't want overspray because I think this paint stays wet for a while, even in the air).

Then hit it with the model paint, a thin coat (has to be thin, this stuff is born thin, and I think it would run very easily) every 5 or 10 minutes. Took about three years, but I used up a can on each side, one thin coat at a time.

Then followed with their ModelMaster clearcoat because I figured it ought to be protected and it had better be the same paint. Used only one can of clearcoat to do both sides; maybe I was bored and/or sick of it by then.

Of course, I tried a small area first, and the match is perfect on my '88.

It's held up very well, to cone strikes and pebbles and whatever. However, the paint does come off on your rag very easily with virtually every kind of cleaner other than car wash soap.

The back lip of the front wheel arch is wearing through again, but I don't think there's any way to stop that.

Subject: Re: [951] Re: best paint?? 9/6/02

To answer your question: yes and no! Not all paint company's flex agent stays in the paint. To my knowledge, most European paint manufacturer's flex additive DOES stay in the paint, while most American manufacturer's have skimped on the agent so that it does evaporate out and leave the owner with no benefit. However, I believe most of that is changing. I used to spray 4" play balls with paint and clear coat flexed 100% and you could throw them or squeeze them to death and they would flex for years after the paintwork. In my opinion, I would add a 5-10% flex to any clear coat to achieve a better durability and chip resistance to road debris.
