▪ Complete each of the following sections for all presentations.

▪ The questions included with each section are designed to help you in the development process; you are not limited to answering those questions. Give a complete description of your planning process from the needs assessment to evaluation.

▪ Turn this in to the assignment reviewer with any accompanying documents that you developed for the presentation.

▪ Include approximate time required to complete each portion of the Development Process.

Needs Assessment

Describe how you identified the topic you chose.

(Who did you talk with? Did you conduct a formal survey or informal conversations?

What types of information did you obtain?)

While I was home right before the internship orientation I got to spend some time with my grandmother at her new home at an independent apartment senior community. My grandma has type 2 diabetes and one morning she actually went to urgent care for feeling like she might faint. The doctor said her blood sugar had dropped due to taking her diabetes medication before eating breakfast that day. My grandma and I started talking about this and I explained the importance of eating small frequent meals in order to maintain appropriate blood sugar levels. My grandma said I was doing such a great job explaining what is going on with blood sugar and diabetes that she would like me to explain this to her friends at the senior community. Of course I agreed!

Approximate Time Spent: 10 min

Planning

Describe your process in planning the presentation.

(Who was involved? What resources did you use? How did you find them?

Describe any age, cultural, ethnic, economic or educational considerations for your target audience as well as any individual needs and limitation. How did you address these factors?)

Since I was staying at my parents while designing this presentation, I tested the material on my father to make sure it was not too high level to present to the senior age group. My dad also had the plastic Easter eggs and I practiced demonstrating the points I was trying to make regarding insulin resistance with him.

Approximate Time Spent: 2 hours

Development

Describe all components of the program or material. Include in your email to your reviewer your lesson plan that you previously sent for review and approval. Attach a copy of the material or any handouts/resources you developed for the program/presentation.

I developed a power point presentation, printed off three MyPlate handouts per participant, bought plastic food to show as portion examples for carb counting and bought sugar-free hard candies for prizes. I practiced my presentation two times with my dad.

Approximate Time Spent: 2 hours

Implementation

Describe the setting, audience, number of participants, what you did to get ready and begin.

When I arrived on the morning of my presentation my grandma and a few friends were waiting for me in the lobby. The activities coordinator showed me to the activities room and helped me move the chairs around. A total of 15 people came! I hooked up my computer to the projector and made sure the lighting was appropriate for everyone to see. The audience was excited for the presentation and was very attentive. There was one man in the group, and I noticed that he closed his eyes and was possibly sleeping for a minute or two for each slide! I was sure to speak slowly and make sure my volume was loud enough for everyone to hear. Everyone participated and almost everyone stayed after to ask numerous questions and go over their MyPlate diagrams.

Self-Evaluation

(Note:  This section is important in helping you to develop and improve your skills.  Please think about the questions carefully and answer honestly).

What problems did you encounter in the development? What went well?

It was challenging to develop a presentation for a target audience that I was not sure how many had the disease I was talking about and I was unsure how much they knew about the topic.

What would you do differently/the same the next time?

The only thing I would have done different would be to find out ahead of time who would be attending so I had a better idea of the disease state and current knowledge of the participants. I maybe could have started my presentation with an anonymous questionnaire. I found that during the presentation some participants were acting slightly disinterested because they did not have diabetes. However, after my presentation these people stayed to ask me questions about other health conditions and/or myths they had heard about certain foods. I think the plastic egg demonstration was extremely effective at helping the audience understand insulin resistance. I also liked using the MyPlate handout, this way people were able to personalize the activity to make it applicable for their own diet preferences. Finally, I liked handing out delicious sugar-free hard candies as a prize for participating in the review session. The seniors love hard candies.

Note:  We are specifically looking for you to critically evaluate yourself and your presentation—this is the best way to develop and improve your presentation skills. We are not looking for you to say you would not change anything. If you can’t think of anything about the presentation to change, talk about what you might do differently for another group. Discuss your impression of the effectiveness of this for the target audience.

Discuss leadership skills you used and/or developed while developing and/or delivering this presentation. What skills will help you in your future as a leader?

I felt like I acted as a leader by doing a quick needs assessment with my grandma and then using my nutrition expertise to put together a relevant presentation to help her and her friends. I think that is one of the important parts of being a dietitian; finding out where there is a deficient in nutrition knowledge and taking the time to organize our thoughts to effectively teach the target audience. My grandma and her friends were extremely impressed with my professionalism and this presentation increased my confidence in the field.
