Demographics

The Census Bureau's current census estimates for each year since the 2010 Census are presented in Table II.4.1. The 2018 estimates indicate that Carbon County's population decreased from 15,885 in 2010 to 14,971 in 2018, or by -6.0 percent. The 2018 population estimate is not yet available broken down by race, age, or gender. For those purposes, we will use the 2017 five-year ACS estimates. Population trends for Carbon County since 2000 are displayed below in Diagram II.4.1.

Population Estimates

The Census Bureau's current estimates indicate that Carbon County's population decreased from 15,885 in 2010 to 14,971 in 2017, or by 5.8 percent. This compares to a statewide population change of 2.5 percent over the period. The number of people from 25 to 34 years of age decreased by 3.4 percent, and the number of people from 55 to 64 years of age decreased by 2.7 percent.

Between 2010 and 2018, the percent change in the Carbon County population by race was white (7.4 percent), black (70.3 percent), American Indian and Alaskan Natives (19.2 percent), Asian (7.8 percent), Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders (7.1 percent), two or more races (37.5 percent), and Hispanic or Latino (2.3 percent). Over the same period, the percent change in the Wyoming population by race was white (1.1 percent), black (47.2 percent), American Indian and Alaskan Natives (9.7 percent), Asian (33.6 percent), Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders (9.8 percent), two or more races (29.1 percent), and Hispanic or Latino (15.9 percent). These data are presented in Table II.4.2.

Table II.4.3 presents the population of Carbon County by age and gender from the 2010 Census and 2018 Current Census Estimates. The 2010 Census count showed a total of 8,553 males, who accounted for 53.8 percent of the population, and 46.2 percent, or 7,332 persons, were female. In 2017, the number of males rose to 8,081 persons, and accounted for 54.0 percent of the population, with 46.0 percent, or 6,890 persons being female.
