I

t is truly an honor to serve as the

Chair of the Cardiovascular Surgery

and Anesthesia Council. CVSA

strives to uphold the mission of the

AHA to reduce morbidity and mortality

due to cardiovascular disease. We

also strive to improve the application

of established surgical procedures

and anesthesia techniques, increase

awareness of new issues in the field of

cardiovascular surgery and anesthesia,

and disseminate new knowledge to

increase the number of patients who

may benefit from safer and more

effective surgical treatment.

CONNECTIONS | WINTER ¡®20 professional.

Scientific Sessions 2019 took place

in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Nov.

16-18. We had a very helpful and

comprehensive discussion at the

CVSA Council Leadership meeting

immediately preceding Scientific

Sessions. One of the main topics was

mechanisms that could increase the

CVSA membership in the AHA, attract

early and mid-career members and

increase current member engagement.

Specific ideas included:

30

? Holding a joint meeting with other

organizations, including residents and

medical students who are interested

in careers in cardiovascular surgery or

anesthesia

? Initiatives to reach out to colleagues

in related fields (perfusionists, nurse

practitioners, physician assistants)

? Development of dedicated mentors/

sponsors that would partner with

interested students and residents

(especially women, and those of other

sociodemographic strata)

? Increasing social media presence for

the CVSA.

Regarding the last point, the CVSA

created a hashtag #CVSA19 that

could identify useful content for CVSA

members throughout the Scientific

Sessions. For 2020, we will update this

to #CVSA20.

Scientific Session highlights included

the William W. L. Glenn Lecture

byJoseph E. Bavaria, MD, Past

President STS, Vice-Chief Division of

Cardiovascular Surgery at University

of Pennsylvania, discussing the

Important role of Surgeons in the

Transcatheter Era. The. Glenn lecture

was established in 1989 in honor of

William W. L. Glenn, MD, a pioneer

cardiac surgeon who made important

contributions to the treatment of

congenital and acquired heart disease.

He was the first surgeon to hold the

position of President of the American

Heart Association (1970-1971).

Other highlighted sessions included

the 4th annual STS at AHA, discussing

Management of Challenging Clinical

Scenarios: Intraoperative Tips and

Tricks. One of the audience interactive

sessions included, The War Room

Returns: Best Plan of Attack for Quality

Outcomes¡Let the Debates Continue,

where surgical leaders and the

audience together discussed different

approaches to complex surgical cases.

The CVSA proudly sponsors several

awards and scholarships for early

career investigators, fellows, residents

and medical students. The Vivien

Thomas Early Career Investigator

Competition acknowledges the

accomplishments of early career

investigator members of CVSA who are

focusing on fundamental and applied

surgical research. The competition

showcased future leaders in our

field with excellent presentations by

Kunal Patel, MD, PhD, from Medical

University of South Carolina, Yuki

Ikeno, MD, PhD, from University of

Colorado, Zhiqi Zhang, MD, from

Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown

University and Michael Paulsen, MD,

from Stanford University. Dr. Paulsen

won the Vivien Thomas competition

with his talk, ¡°Comprehensive Ex

Vivo Biomechanical Analysis of Five

Clinically Utilized Operative Approaches

to Reimplantation Aortic Valve-Sparing

Root Replacement.¡± CVSA is also

pleased to recognize the Resident Prize

awardees: Dae Hyun Lee, MD, Shin Rong

Lee, MD, PhD, and Yuanjia Zhu, MD.

At the CVSA Council Dinner, we were

able to celebrate another successful

year. It was an honor to recognize

two extraordinary leaders from our

Council. Marc Ruel, MD, MPH, FAHA,

Division Head of Cardiac Surgery,

University of Ottawa was bestowed

the 2019 Distinguished Achievement

Award. The CVSA Scientific Councils¡¯

Distinguished Achievement Award

recognizes individuals who have

made major contributions to the field

of cardiovascular surgery including

teaching, clinical care, research and

leadership in national or international

organizations. Joseph Woo, MD, FAHA,

Chair, Department of Cardiothoracic

Surgery, Stanford University School

of Medicine was awarded the 2019

CVSA Surgery Mentoring Award. CVSA

annually honors one of its members who

has guided junior researchers to build

future generations of cardiovascular

scientists and surgeons. Dr. Woo

has provided exceptional support

for undergraduate students, medical

students, residents, cardiothoracic

surgeons and anesthesiologists both

nationally and globally.

Please remember to renew your

membership and apply for FAHA.

Finally, it is already time to save the

date for Scientific Sessions 2020.

Before November, encourage your

colleagues to join our council, and

don¡¯t forget to tag #CVSA20 where

relevant.
