STEP 1 - Learn About Yourself

What are your interests and abilities? What type of personality do you have and how does it affect your career choices? What are your values, skills and experiences? Your guidance counselor at school has access to many different interest assessments/inventories and knows how to help you go through the process and understand the results. If you want to do this on your own, log onto to help clarify your career interests and identify various options.

STEP 2 ? Explore Careers

Do your homework by following these suggestions: ? Talk with people (your parents, other relatives, guidance counselor, etc.); pick their brain; ask lots of questions. ? Volunteer in a business or organization that hires people in your career interest area. ? Participate in an internship, co-op, or youth apprenticeship that provides you with a valuable hands-on experience. ? Work at a part-time job to gain valuable workplace skills. Any work experience will provide you with the skills you'll need to be

successful, such as: communication, teamwork, professional ethics and behavior, responsibility, decision-making and problem-solving skills. ? Participate in a student career shadow. Spend a few hours or a day watching someone who works in your career interest area. You'll have the opportunity to find out what that career involves on a daily basis and decide if it's the career for you. ? Attend a career day or career fair where you can ask employers questions about their business. ? Read about careers in current magazine/newspaper articles; catalogs or brochures published by special training schools, colleges, businesses, and professional/labor organizations; journals or booklets published by trade and professional organizations.

STEP 3 ? Pursue Education & Training

Create an educational plan to reach your career goal. This includes choosing the appropriate courses to take in high school and make sure you are prepared for college or other post-secondary training. Talk to your guidance counselor and teachers about academic requirements and ask for their recommendations. STEP 4 ? Look For and Accept a Job

After you have completed the necessary education or training for your chosen career, develop an effective, attention-grabbing r?sum? listing personal contact information, a career objective, educational background, work/volunteer experience, activities/accomplishments, and references. Research job openings in the geographical area where you would like to live and begin applying for positions in which you are interested. Interview for as many positions as you wish, consider offers carefully, make your decision and begin working in a job that best meets your and your employer's needs. In a competitive job market, those with a combination of education and training, good interpersonal and technical skills, and solid work experience will get the jobs.
