Principle #9: “As If” Essay
You will be writing an “As If” Essay that will be written as if you have already achieved your goals in life. Look ahead 20+ years and write the essay as though you have already experienced success in the areas of college, career, family, friends, relationships, philanthropy (giving to others), savings, investments, possessions you have acquired, and your hobbies. Use the outline on the back of this page to begin drafting your essay.

Organization of Paper:
Paragraph #1: Introduction
Paragraph #2: Write about your achievements in college. Include the name of your college, your major, the degree(s) you received, your final G.P.A., clubs or activities you participated in, any special honors or achievements you received, the date you graduated, and who was there to celebrate at graduation with you.
Paragraph #3: Write about the career you have enjoyed success in. Describe what you do on a day-to-day basis, the challenges of the career, the highlights of the career, the benefits (health coverage, retirement benefits, sick leave, bonuses, vacation days, etc), how you have advanced in your career, and any plans for the future. What risks did you take?
Paragraph #4: Write about the family, friends, and relationships you have. Are you married? Do you have kids? If so, describe your wife/husband and kids. How are they successful? What do you do together as a family? Are you single? Dating? Do you have many friends? If so, what do you do together for fun? How have they supported you over the years?
Paragraph #5: Write about your philanthropic endeavors. Who have you helped over the years? What resources have you given to others (i.e. money, time, support, etc.)? What charities do you support? How have you helped your friends, family, and the less fortunate?
Paragraph #6: Write about your savings account(s) and investment portfolio. How much money is in savings? How are you making your money grow? How have you invested your money so far? What risks did you take? How have you planned for your retirement?
Paragraph #7: Write about your possessions and hobbies. Describe the items that you possess. Why did you buy them? What hobbies occupy your free time?
Paragraph #8: Conclusion. Reflect on what you have learned in the last 20+ years. Predict what your future will look like.
