Principles of Biomedical Sciences Syllabus

Medical Sciences I

Myers Park High School

Mrs. Liles

2011-2012

WELCOME Health Science and the Biomedical Sciences Program at Myers Park High School. I am very excited to be teaching Medical Science I.

Description:

This course uses advanced investigative approaches to the study of human and social sciences as related to medicine and health care. Emphasis includes the language of medicine, body chemistry, anatomy and physiology, and the current and futuristic study of diseases and disorders. Skills in science, mathematics, health, and social studies are reinforced in this course. Students will begin with learning basic medical terminology and then proceed through each body system, studying the structures, functions and diseases associated with each system.

The goal is to help prepare students for the 21st century where they will learn continuously, think critically, work with others to solve problems, and use technology proficiently.

The curriculum is posted on a student website . Then simply type in Liles in the search box. The notes for the year as well as electronic flash cards and other resources are posted to aid students. Students will use a separate learning management system site, Moodle, to complete and upload assignments. Testing and quizzes will also be online through this site.

Required Materials:

Notebooks: Students are required to keep and maintain a notebook for this class. The notebook should be a three ring binder with a folder with pockets inside. It is my advice to use one binder only for this class and not to share it with any other classes.

Flash Drive

Grades:

50% Tests

50 % Quizzes, Labs, Class Work and Homework

Major Presentations and Projects may count as test or quiz grades.

Attendance, Late Work and Make-Up Work

• Attendance- Every effort should be made to be in class

• Recovery – Any absence after 10 days must be recovered minute by minute per CMS School Board Policy. Recovery for this class is available from 2:30 – 3 Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays only. It takes one week to recover 1 day, so plan ahead. Recovery will end BEFORE EXAMS. There will be no recovery during exams.

• Late Work: Homework, projects, labs, etc. are due at the beginning of class on the assigned day. A letter grade will be deducted from the grade for each day an assignment is late.

• Make-Up Work: It is the student’s responsibility to find out what material was missed when absent. Assignments will be listed on a make up sheet or posted online. Students may check the Moodle site and the site when out and read the notes or activity at home. There will not be time for make-up work in class. All labs, quizzes and projects will have to be made up after school on Mondays Tuesdays or Thursdays.

Classroom Expectations:

Be Present: In order for you to learn, you must be present. The expectation is that you are in the classroom, willing and ready to learn each day. This class is fun but it is also challenging. If you miss class, you miss a lot and it is difficult to complete make up work for this type of class.

Be Prepared: Bring your notebook, flash drive, writing utensils and a good attitude to class. Wear your ID Badge EVERYDAY. Please be mindful of the dress code. I do not like sending students to lock out for dress code violations, but it is something that I am required to do so please follow the dress code!

Be Respectful and Courteous: Please remember to treat others in a tolerant, considerate, courteous and respectful manner at all times. Always do your own work, if you are uncertain if you are allowed to collaborate, ASK. We frequently work with partners or in small groups. It is important that each person contributes. Learning to work effectively in groups is a life skill that you will get many opportunities to practice. Because this is a course with students up and working every day, it is many times a noisy classroom. Please remember that there is a difference between discussing the current activity and discussing social activities. You are expected to use your time wisely. If your group is finished with the current activity, you may always be proactive and work on upcoming assignments. The laptops are provided for research and should not be used for visiting other internet sites. Students will be given one warning about visiting other websites. The second occurrence will result in 30 minutes after school detention. No food or drinks are allowed in the classroom due to working on computers frequently. No cell Phones!

Do Your Best: This includes every class, lab, and assignment. I expect you to try your hardest, and make your best effort. You will only get out of the class as much as you put in. Don’t settle for less than your best! A curious mind is required daily.
