NOTE: Spelling, grammar, logic, and content will be considered.

Part 3: Include a recommendation letter completed by a Science Teacher: Please comment on this student’s effort, attitude, motivation, school attendance, and dedication to pursue a medical course of studies and their ability to work with other students.

COLLEGE PREP ACADEMIC PROGRAM

The college prep Health/Science intensive curriculum will open career opportunities while preparing you for further education, especially in health and STEM areas.

• Full Range English, Math, Social Studies

• Tech Prep Chemistry and Anatomy &

Physiology

• Genetics, Forensics

• Expanded Science Curriculum

• Specialized Technological Classrooms

Our challenging academic program will prepare you for college, while our specialized courses will introduce you to many exciting and rewarding medical careers. While you’re still in school:

• Earn college credits

• Learn First Aid and CPR

• Become a Medical Response Technician (MRT)

• Shadow health care professionals

• Be certified as a Nursing Assistant (C.N.A)

SPECIALIZED COURSES

Medical Careers I / Medical Careers II

Explore many of the careers through classroom study, hospital tours, and presentations by medical specialists and use computer skills and the Internet with the context of medicine and healthcare.

Medical Careers III / Medical Careers IV

Advanced course includes shadowing, MRT, CPR and First Aid certification with successful completion of the program.

Tech Prep Chemistry

Academically challenging college level chemistry. Upon successful completion of the academic standards required by Housatonic Community College, students can receive four chemistry college

credits.

Anatomy & Physiology Academically challenging college level anatomy and physiology. Upon successful completion of the academic standards required by Housatonic Community College, students can receive college credits.

Genetics Master the basic concepts of genetics, DNA structure and function. It includes labs.

Forensic Medicine Interpret and establish the relationship between science and medical facts and civil or criminal laws.

Nursing Assistant (C.N.A) A state certified elective. Students will be taught the basic skills and will spend a minimum of 60 hours in the clinical setting. Successful completion of the program will lead to certification.

SHADOWING

Did you ever think about what it would be like to work in a patient care profession such as a doctor, a nurse, or a pharmacist? You can learn for yourself by spending time with health professionals at area hospitals, pharmacies and health care facilities. The “Shadowing” program gives you some hours of actual hands on experience with health professionals such as doctors, nurses, therapists and emergency medical workers. You will visit these and other facilities:

The Medical Careers Magnet Program is a rigorous and challenging college preparatory program for students interested in pursing a Medical or Allied Health Career.

INTERNSHIPS are designed to provide seniors with authentic work experience in the medical field. Students are now participating in internships at: Saint Vincent’s Medical Center,

Bridgeport Hospital, local pharmacies, and day care facilities. The internships provide a valuable learning experience.
