Syllabus: English for Professional Track (EPT): Arts and Sport sciencesFall 2016Instructor:Contact info:Office:Office Hours: Class Time:Classroom:I. Course Description English for Professional Track (EPT) is an integrated ESP (English for Specific Purposes) course aimed at raising the standard of English proficiency within the students’ major areas: School of Arts and Sport Sciences; School of Natural Sciences and Engineering; School of Business Management and Economics; School of Humanities and Social Sciences; and School of Medicine, Pharmacy & Nursing. EPT: Arts and Sport Sciences is designed to enhance the language skills of arts and sports students for academic and professional use, based on business English. Focusing on the requirements of their majors and subsequent careers, students learn to communicate within a general and specific context through in-class language tasks. There is a balanced approach to the development of the four key language skills; students will engage in (1) speaking skills, (2) writing to build the foundations of communication, (3) reading strategies to strengthen fluency and (4) listening for comprehension. In order to achieve this, students will be provided with written, audio, and video materials (DVD-ROM and EPT website (6 video clips on sports and 6 video clips on arts)) related to the arts and sports field, which will increase their ability to discuss major-related topics in the target language. As well as skill development, students will sharpen their grammatical understanding and learn new vocabulary in order to build the confidence to communicate in a variety of situations directly relevant to their careers. II. Course Goals The main goal of this course is for Arts and Sport Sciences students to increase all 4 skills of English ability through goal-orientated activities in class. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have:Enhanced their ability to communicate in spoken form on general and major-related topics, giving them a wider range of understanding of a number of different accents that they may encounter in their professional lives.Gained an understanding of how to create career specific and general work-related written formats such as writing emails and writing a successful CV (curriculum vitae).Developed their general understanding of major-related and business-related texts, and learned and practiced specific reading strategies in order to be able to carry out particular tasks.Developed their listening and speaking abilities, including speaking on the phone, turning-taking and turn-giving at meetings, job-interviewing, and checking presentation tips in using PowerPoint.Experienced particular work-related situations that they are likely to encounter in their professional lives and used key phrases and expressions necessary for problem-solving.Become confident in using grammar structures and vocabulary identified as necessary for their major-specific needs.III.
