Basic InformationRachael Fogartyfogartrm@mail.uc.eduCarl H. Lindner College of BusinessMarketingInternational Co-op ExperienceGlobal StudiesMid-January 2017Mid-August 2017Project InformationAbstract This global studies honors experience includes an intensive cultural study and a professional development opportunity, both of which are accomplished through engaging in a marketing co-op position with a business in Germany. The UC office of international co-op provides a rough itinerary for students interested in pursuing a co-op position in Germany, so that will be complied with, but I will also work with the ICP office individually to ensure that my global experience will be as enriching as possible. The preparation involves intensive German language classes and global cultural courses so that I will be able to live successfully as a professional on my own in Germany for 8 months. On top of my academic preparation I will have to arrange a living situation and learn about what is expected of me in a business environment in Europe. But after the preparation I also continue in my global studies development by experiencing German culture as a resident for 8 months.Learning Outcomes:Recognize the interdependence of world economies, political systems and the environmentAn international co-op experience will help accomplish this learning goal by allowing me as a student to observe Germany not only as a tourist, but also as a business professional. As a part of the workforce, I will be challenged to view the economy of Germany and the world from a different perspective. Interact with individuals from different cultures and express a sensitivity, appreciation and respect for the complex range of experiences of diverse peoplesIn business, participating in a co-op or any kind of work experience would not effectively be done without plenty of interaction. This experience will allow for opportunities to learn about business from my colleagues, and I can also learn cultural nuances and develop my language skills the more I interact with them. Connection to goals and academic theoriesWorking with a company abroad is a perfect way to combine pursuing personal interests of experiencing other cultures and professional skills gained by working in a different cultural environment. Not only will this experience provide an opportunity to expand my professional network on a global scale, it will also allow me to learn about a new culture in the most intensive way –by being completely immersed in it for an extended period of time. This length of my co-op term is an integral part of what makes this a significant global studies experience, because 8 months is enough time to explore Europe, hone my language skills, make lasting relationships with my colleagues, and develop professional skills for the future. To academically prepare for this experience I will be doing a lot of work before leaving as a 4th year. Beginning with 2nd year, I will be taking Orientation to International Co-op (PD1081). International co-op also requires a Breadth of Knowledge credit, so I will take Topics of International Economics (ECON5040) to expand my understanding of the global economy. I feel this is the best elective choice for preparedness as a business co-op. Additionally, while English is the international language of business, I will definitely want to learn some German before I go, so I will also take intensive German language classes for co-op, GRMN1061 and 1062.Independence This project’s element of independence can be described in the very definition of the word –I will be preparing for, documenting and accomplishing my co-op experience on another continent completely on my own. Taking an 8-month professional position will provide a lot more independence and initiative on my part than taking a trip would. I will need to make sure I am as culturally literate as possible before I go because I will not be simply sight-seeing, I will be presenting myself in a professional manner.ReflectionAlong with the reflection I will do post-experience, I plan to update a blog to document not only the new skills I learn at my co-op, but also the adventures I will have as a tourist in my free time. While my first priority when I am in Germany will certainly be to work hard and learn as much as I can from my co-op position, it certainly wouldn’t be an effective global studies experience without cultural exploration. I will make posts and include pictures of new things I experience –from food, music, people, architure, to transit. I will discuss how my experiences differ from life in Cincinnati, what I observe to be similarities and differences in workplaces in different countries, and what I learn about German culture and university life.DisseminationWithin the College of Business, there is plenty of encouragement from faculty to participate in study abroad. My plan is to speak to freshmen in their core classes about how I was able to apply my global experience to developing my skills as a business professional, and the benefits of spending an extended period of time abroad.Project advisorGayle ElliotAssociate Professor of Professional PracticeInternational Co-op Program (ICP)UC E-mail: gayle.elliott@uc.eduPhone: 513-556-543 ................
