Ayala is a first year medical student who matriculated at URMC after a career in elementary education in Manhattan. Ayala graduated from Thomas Edison State College in 2003 after which she obtained a masters degree in social work at the NYU Ehrenkranz School of Social Work in New York City. During this time, Ayala worked with adults and children with mental illness, developmental disabilities and drug and alcohol addiction in both inpatient and outpatient settings and in the process developed a passion for working with the urban underserved. It was during this time that she decided to pursue a career in medicine with the ultimate goal of working to bridge health disparities through primary care and community advocacy. Ayala completed the post baccalaureate premedical program at Columbia University in NYC and taught second grade in a Manhattan elementary school during that time.
In addition to medicine, Ayala has a particular passion for poetry and literature. Ayala has been a finalist in Concordia University’s Summer Literary Seminars three years in a row and has been the recipient of numerous scholarships for literary programs around the world.
