What Can I Do To Help My Child At Home

Please use the classroom Weebly Website to help your child succeed!! All subjects below have their own links with many extension activities to help your child succeed!!!

Reading:

• Read out loud to your child, have them read to you, discuss the story with them.

• Discuss whatever the class book is we are currently reading as a group. Have them share their journal and pictures with you. Review questions and answers to make sure they have complete sentences starting with capitals and punctuation.

• Share the animal stories and discuss questions

• Take turns reading a poem from the Poem and Song book of the month, Located on the weebly. Have them read the poems they have written themselves.

• Go over vocabulary from their Daily 5 folders. Read it and discuss definitions.

Spelling:

• Practice Unit words for the week. Place them on sticky notes around the house in important places. Mirror in the bathroom, refrigerator door, Wii! Controller, Be Creative!

• Use Spelling Flashcards

• Review concepts that are practiced during the week. Short vowel and long vowel patterns are always important to do refresher lessons.

• Review, “Words I Need To Practice” found in their Spelling Notebook.

• Have your child complete the additional spelling practices located on the Weebly.

Writing

• Share quick writes from the Writer’s Workshop Notebook. Have them do extra ones on the weekend or over vacations. (Only take about 5 -10 minutes) Encourage your child to add lots of details and use powerful language. Use techniques from the Writer’s Workshop Notebook.

• Write for fun together! Make up silly stories and share them. Encourage proper writing skills and spelling in everything they do at home. Grocery list, signing cards, etc.

• Practice Retellings with a story map: There is a copy in their Writer’s Notebook. Go over the rubric and Discuss what makes a good writing piece.

• Encourage them to blog on the weebly.

• Join the parent Blog!!

Math:

• Memorize basic addition and subtraction facts as well a Multiplication Facts 1-12.

• Play games from the book!

• Let your child pay at the cashier and figure out the tip to leave at dinner to practice math skills!

• Have them play educational math games on the ipad.

• Utilize DREAMBOX and 20 free problems on everyday.

• Use the checklist on the weebly to review math skills that need to be secure by the end of 4th grade.

Science

• Ask about activities they did in class that day.

• Research on their ipads further ideas about the topic they are learning about.

• Review vocabulary, make flashcards, use study guides to help.

• Don’t wait until the last minute to study for a test!!

Social Studies

• Share USA journal with your child!

• Encourage your child to practice map skills and review placement of states and capitals

• Review vocabulary, make flashcards, use study guide to help prepare for tests!
